Absolutely not. In today's society where two people work I think this would be unfair and as you say, rather outdated.
However, the simple fact remains that after childcare, OP's only bringing in an additional £1.97 a day.
Lets turn the table around for a second and play devil's advocate. If OP's partner started doing overtime which meant that he would not be around as much to see the kids and only got £1.97 in the process I think OP would be quite rightly pointing out that its not really worth it.
I understand both points of view and to be fair both are valid.0
