Council move, not entitled to HB and running up huge debts!

Hmmm probably not. I guess it's just unfair that we have went from being really well off to having to count the pennies because of some alcoholic idiot down the stairs. He's not lost his house or has to travel an hour and a half to work. My daughter has lost many of her possessions and I'm just so down about it all
Just seems really unfair. xxx
You were really well off before due to huge subsidisation by the taxpayer. You still have significant subsidisation from the taxpayer now, it sounds like you have a very decent income, your rent is a bit high but you can easily live off £300 a week.
I'm not surprised your MP isn't interest in helping someone who is pleading poverty while spending £400 a month on dogs. You need a reality check - your income is the equivalent to somebody on a wage of £49,000 a year.0 -

How do you arrive at that figure?
The OP grosses 27k and then the household gets another £824 pounds per month in benefits, equivalent (if it were treated like a salary that had tax on top) of 12k.
I think you are out by around 20% or so?0 -

If you enter £49000 as salary, and add student loan in (I pay this so reasonable to add in my opinion), then take home is £2680, which is roughly the figure you gave earlier in the thread.0 -
I'd say Scotland has a more socialist bent but isn't the allocation of social housing based on UK wide principles which prioritises need, it's needs based? Or has there been a change?
I know there are differences in housing law but wasn't aware of any specific differences when it comes to a local councils statutory homelessness obligations?
I'm not saying there isn't a difference, just that I am ignorant about it.
Yeah, they loosely run a points system. But most housing associations (not so much the councils) also recognise the need for a balanced community - so working people do occasionally get a look in. Have always found that the local Housing Officers judge each case on it's own merits, dunno if that means they've got more freedom to act within Scottish law compared to down South, or whether simply being a housing association gives them a certain leeway that the councils don't enjoy.I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0 -
definatly look at private renting. You will get somewhere in Fife decent for £500-£550 as a 2 bed property.0

Are you confusing the allocation system with the fact that in some places there is less demand on the social housing properties, so there is spare capacity for HOs to award properties to non priority cases once they've dealt with the priority ones?
Again, I'm speculating.0 -

And, according to other posts, £150+ a month on Cable television!
I know it's unfair you've had to move but if you don't want to rent privately then I think the only thing to do is wait it out in the temporary accomodation and hope they will be able to house you quickly.0 -

Nar, in fact quite the opposite. I've seen working families be allocated houses in some well sought after areas where the waiting lists are very long indeed. Perhaps the fact they waited so long gets them in, I dunno, perhaps family living nearby or a close connection to the area. Anecdotal, doesn't prove much I suppose. But there's more to Scottish social housing than points alone, certainly at ground level.I no longer contribute to the Benefits & Tax Credits forum.0 -
You have 2 options really:
1. Wait it out in temporary accommodation, knowing that it is that - temporary and remember that soon you will go back to being "very well off" again
2. Go to private rental.
I think a lot of people would be quite happy to be in your current situation, knowing that they will have a chance of getting a council house even though they earn a good wage, and will be well off. Some people will never get an opportunity to have a council house.
Like I said, yes it is very unfair that you and your family were made to move when the neighbour was harrassing you, but you just need to look on the positive side of things! If you really can't tolerate being in temp accommodation any longer then surely it's good to know that you can afford to move into private which a lot of people cant do.
Dont get down about this, good luck!0 -
This is why so many people call for changes in social housing tenancies.
£27k is a good wage and you are more than able to afford alternative housing so it is your choice to stick out this situation.
I'm amazed you feel you should be entitled to HB tbh.0
