Limited Trading on Sundays

It's surely time for repealing the Sunday Trading Act .
People clearly want to shop on a Sunday as evidenced by the large number out today .
No doubt staff would be pleased to have the chance to earn some more money. Additional hours might create more jobs.
So why do we in England continue to confine our shopping to six hours in larger stores?
Smaller shops can trade - so there is not really a principle.
If those who are religious don't like shopping on Sundays then don't do it, but don't expect the rest of us to be restricted.

I've worked in retail & hated working Sundays, as a full timer i opted out at the first oppertunity - while i'm not the most religious it's a day of rest, switching it to a normal day could potentially see many full timers forced to work Sundays which could in turn impact on family life. Also i think you'll find that religious leaders would be dead set against this, i can't imagine the Church of England or Catholic Church standing for it, while they have no direct say in affairs it's also safe to say atleast CoE have a slight influence within the country and i think it would be a step too far in the secularisation of society! (cripes that's a good word for me at this time of the day!) Besides, i'm guessing like me you're old enough to remember the fuss kicked up when they allowed stores to trade on a Sunday by the religious movement - nothing screws with democracy like religious hysteria!Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

Years ago we used to have quiet and our time on Sunday. Now, no more, it is nearly a normal day, whence it was just for shops to open longer, now it is the lorrys have to deliver the goods as well, then the warehouses, now the factories?
I always boycott shopping this madness day.0 -

Six hours is more than enough for anyone to do their shopping, why would you need more than 6 hours?0

Yeah, let's all pray to the god of consumerism. Why have a day of rest, spirituality, whatever you want to call it, when you can go out and buy more shit you don't need?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

Tony - Do you work on a Sunday?
Also if sunday becomes a normal working day for retailers, it may become the normal for more occupations so the weekend becomes less of end.0 -
It would be nice to be able to pick up some milk on the way home from the station on Sunday evenings.Forwandert wrote: »Six hours is more than enough for anyone to do their shopping, why would you need more than 6 hours?fluffnutter wrote: »Yeah, let's all pray to the god of consumerism. If the shops were open longer on Sundays it wouldn't be obligatory to spend the extra time shopping in addition to your usual shopping habits. I'd welcome the flexibility it would provide.Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0 -
