Limited Trading on Sundays

  • 6 hours was a compromise - there's 6 days of up to 24 hour opening, as well as 24/7 online shopping.
    Surely that's enough?

It would be nice to be able to pick up some milk on the way home from the station on Sunday evenings.

Smaller shops aren't bound by the 6 hour rule on Sundays. Do you really only pass supermarkets on your way home?

  • I have worked on Sunday for extra premiums in the past, would not be interested in working for normal salary with no enchancements.

I think there is enough time to shop with the current opening hours.

Luckily you can!! Corner shops selling food can open late on Sundays if they choose, including Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local, Spar, etc., as well as filling stations etc. How brilliant is that?!

And Tony, what job do you do then ?that you cannot manage with 24 hour opening supermarkets 6 days a week plus 6 hours Sunday , local "corner" shops / convenience / local stores that open mainly 06.00-22.00 on Sundays etc etc etc, local garages etc etc etc

It hasn't happened in Scotland and we've had normal opening hours on a Sunday for years.

Has it caused any good / bad points compared to England?

I would welcome an extended Sunday shopping time, doesn't have to be usual hours, but a few hours extra so I don't have to rush out at 4.30pm to get food when the supermarket shuts at 5. I would like a bit more flexibility. Also if anyone goes into supermarkets on a Sunday they know it's busier than a Saturday as they don't have as they get about the same amount of people shopping as a Saturday, but have to squeeze it into 6 hours, as oppose to 12 or more.

Sunday pay? I've never gotten Sunday pay before, and I worked in various shops. Bank holidays I got paid more, but never on a Sunday. Hours wouldn't change too much, it's just the current Sunday workers would get a few more hours, bit more pay means more money to spend/pay off debts and also boost the economy!

I put a typical male perspective on it.
I hate retail therapy with the wife.

If shops were open on a sunday longer, that would give her more time for her to go shopping and me to be dragged along with her and spend more money.
Increasing my level of debt, missing a mortgage payment then plunging the banks into the finicial crisis and making the country worse off:D

My wife given the choice between paying the mortagage or a lipsy dress? Its a no brainer for her.

To be honest I suspect the only difference is more flexible shopping hours for people to do their shopping. Businesses that traditionally closed on a Sunday remain closed and those who were open anyway (factories, mills, oil & gas production, emergency services etc) have not changed their working hours. The shops themselves are mostly staffed by students, older school children and those who wish to work on a Sunday. I've never heard of someone being forced to change their hours but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened somewhere of course.

Overall I'd say it makes very little difference either way. Scotland could go back to shorter Sunday hours and we'd adjust to it in time but why would we change something that is so little bother.
