Hope you both get an extra day of during the week for it.

A lot of people do not.

Why would you get an "extra" day off? As long as you get the legal requirement to rest as laid down by the WTR then anything over and above is a bit of a bonus.
  • Wow, i never knew that this happened in England. I've always worked Sundays, and even though it's pretty much a normal shopping day to me, i've always been paid either time and a half or double time for Sundays, which makes up the majority of my wages!
Without that, i would have to work extra to make up the cash, which i can't due to uni.
Where i work, we are open 8am-8pm on Sundays, like every other day. And in the past, other places i've worked in has been 9-6 same as a normal working day in the shop.

I remember living in Germany and the shops shut at 12 on Saturday, they were only open Saturday afternoons once a month. No lorries on Sunday except for essential fresh supplies. Bliss.

I always found the biggest complainers about shops not being open on Sunday and late were the M-F 9-5 brigade !!

Chester85 - If you used to work in retail and the only day off you got was Sunday it is a good job shops didn't open on Sundays or you wouldn't have got that. As for getting rid of the Sunday opt out as far as I know it is a legal thing and companies can not get rid of it as you said. People can opt out of Sunday working whenever they want as long as they give notice, nothing the company can do.

Sunday was my scheduled day off, extended hours or not except at Christmas when I was doing store visits on Sundays.

In 20 odd years I've yet to encounter anyone who refused to work a Sunday and this is at a major FTSE retailer. We actually got a lot of applicants specifically requesting Sunday hours and we advertised for Sunday managers and sunday staff, we were overwhelmed with applications as a company

The appetite for staff to work is certainly there and the full timers, who are the biggest opposition, wouldn't have to oover the shifts anyway as the extra staff would do so

People just like to complain and be awkward, there is no reason why a local tesco can be open from 8am to 10pm on a Sunday and a large Tesco can only be open 6 hours. Its ridiculous. I would imagine very few people work at Tesco for the joy of working there so I would think that people would welcome the opportunity to work for more hours and earn more money and like previous people have said if you don't want to work on a Sunday then someone will want to.

  • Roll on Easter Sunday, the only day in the year when the Cathedrals of Merchandise are closed. If I had my way, they would all close on Sundays. We forget those who fought for Bank Holidays, so that we could all have at least a day off from the mill!

And to those who feel the need to shop 24/7, get a life

Normally you speak alot of sense but the vast majority of people that work sundays get other days of the mill so it doesn't matter does it
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!

How many are 'forced' to work Sunday, how man shop workers are members of the Union?

I like the continent and Germany, Belgium where these emporiums are shut. We do not need to go to them 24/7, nor do we need 24/7. I have it uop when the delviery van comes round after 6, that is far too late for me, on my estate they are still ramming it home after 9 and the council are absolutley toothless (Dursley go a shiney new Fire Station, Mr Sainsbury got an emporium!). Yes it gives choice, but look ate what this has done.

    Shop opens Sunday
    Shop needs Stock
Lorry driver forced to work on Sunday to deliver goods
    Warehouse open on Sunday
Forklift driver forced to work on Sunday, even though he has worked the last 6 days on the trot.
Forklift driver's wife fed up with not their time at the Weekend.

That is why these places should open only as Follows: -

    Monday 9:00 to 5:30
    Tuesday 9:00 to 5:30
    Wednesday 9:00 to 1:30
    Thursday 9:00 to 7:30
    Friday 9:00 to 5:30
    Saturday 9:00 to 3:30
    Sunday SHUT.
  • Even people employed for Sunday have the option to opt out, that is by law.

The only people who can opt of working on a Sunday are those whose employment with the company concerned started before the Sunday trading act was brought in in 1994, and those people employed after this time and whose contract doesn't state working on a Sunday is, or may be required.

So anyone who has been with a employer for under 17 years and whose contract mentions Sunday work can't opt out of being asked to work on this day.

Heaven forbid that shops should be open at a time when it would suit customers!

Thankfully in my locale I and others have access to twenty four hour shopping seven days a week.
