  • I currently have a claim in process with the A&L for overdraft charges totalling £4700. This amount is made up of unpaid item charges and charges for exceeding my overdraft limit.

I have received an offer from the A&L advising me that they are prepared to pay the difference between the charges I have incurred and the amount that would have been added to my account had they charged the £12.00 recommended charge. However, they state that charges for exceeding the overdraft limit on an account are not included in the guidelines and they are only therefore prepared to pay the difference for unpaid item charges. They have offered £419!

I don't believe that this is correct and was under the impression that overdraft charges could also be claimed. If this is the case, what should I do now in light of the Test Case. Can I still dispute the fact that they have handled my case incorrectly?

You'll get there Nadirish and not long to go now!

I was lucky enough to deal with some nice people at Wragge who were actually quite obliging. Had to keep reminding myself they are the "middle men"rolleyes.gif I had far more problems with rudeness at the local court ... suppose they're inundated!

The £12 figure I belive related to credit card charges not as far as I am aware bank charges. In any case where the overdraft charges where incurred because of the unpaid item charge tehn I cannot see why they are not refundable.
As I am not the Pope or legally qualified I may be wrong so feel free to get a second opinion from a qualified person

Not a keyboard error I'm afraid! It definitely was only £419.00. I've spoken to the Financial Ombudsman this afternoon and they advised that any default charges that have been applied to a bank account could be claimed back - not just unpaid item charges.

I'm going to write to the A&L now to let them know there offer is unacceptable. Fingers crossed!

    Hi
I am having problems with my Alliance and Leicester account. I opened it as a parachute account because I have severe financial problems and I was given to understand that A & L were a good bet as they have no ties with other banks. However they keep making mistakes on my accounts re transfers from my sole to joint account. I called yesterday as they did a transfer twice on two days following and charges me £34.00 for the mistake. I spoke to a young lady who said she would refer it on and hopefully get my charge back. When I checked my account today they had done the transfer again and I presume another charge will follow. I spoke to internet banking and was told that they would refer the error to somebody more senior but would be unable to do anything about the charge.
When I asked why they said it was because of the court case going on at present and all banks were not able to deal with or discuss any charges issues!!!
I am now on hold waiting to speak to a supervisor and wonder if anybody else is haveing same problems or can suggest another bank to move our accounts to
  • Thank you Martin and team for help with reclaiming bank charges. I have been successful with Nat West sport-smiley-001.gif but am having problems with Alliance & Leicester.

Their charges are £32 each. So far they have said that they will repay us £20 for each failed cheque or failed direct debit charge they have applied to the account saying that they feel £12 is an acceptable price to pay. We do not agree.

With their last offer letter they sent their own schedule of the charges which have left quite a few out compared to my list. I have just sent them another letter but instead of only sending a schedule I have copied all the statements with chrages on and highlighted every one. So fingers crossed!

When I examined the charges again I noticed that quite a few were only stated as 'Miscellaneous Charge OD Charge', without any other information. It is these charges that have been left off their schedule.

Has anyone else had this happen to them and if so did they ever give you a good reason for these charges (legal or not)?

Also, most of these charges do not have dates next to them so how do you know when they were actually appied to the account and if you were actually over your limit or not?

OK so that is another gripe about Alliance and Leicester, their statements are not printed with dates next to any transaction or in date order so how are we expected to keep a close eye on the account?

Sorry for the gripe but I've been wanting to get that off my chest for a while and Alliance & Leicester will not give me a straight answer about any of this.
  • Hi i'm in the middle of reclaiming against the A&L. I recieved a 7 page document from them today telling me of thier case to defend.. Has anyone taken them and won ? If so can you share your story? Thanks Dave

  • Hi There,

I have just received back all my requested charges information and was at the point of adding up etc and sending in the next letter, but obviously with recent events should I and can I still progress to the next stage?

Also I worry they will close my account, did anyone else lose their A&L account through trying to claim charges?

    Thanks in advance
