Microsoft Money - Auotmatically Updating Share Prices

LucianH, looking at the example, they use Ford, which has a symbol of 'F'. At it's very simplest, usually quotes in London use a .L after the company symbol, so Standard Chartered would be STAN.L Do you want to see if that works? Like you, I would like just a download from Excel, and get the prices into Excel myself.
I've downloaded an Excel spreadsheet from gummy-stuff dot org forward slash yahoo-data.htm, changed the url according to the instructions given to point to yahoo UK, slapped in a few UK symbols and bloody hell, it worked first time.

it worked OK for me.
You don't need to understand Java, you just download and run the program as any other. You also have to set up a share portfolio on (preferably) the FT.COM website with the companies you want to update, and use the download to CSV option to create a data file. Make sure you have a dummy investment account set up in Money then follow the instructions on previous link to upload the CSV data into the app, which creates the OFX file and triggers Money to automatically upload it.
P
However... all did not work fine. I pulled in a CSV file from an FT.com portfolio, created a mapping file and changed currency to GBP. The resultant OFX file however seemed to ignore the GBP and the symbol mapping. It also did not have any "randomised" share holdings.
I edited the OFX file in notepad to change USD to GBP, changed the symbols and made the qty of shares 1. I then imported this into Money (creating a dummy account) which worked fine. I then deleted the dummy account.
And the good news... the prices for the sample of shares I had used were updated on my Money portfolios. So a partial success but a number of things need to be ironed out with using the hle-ofx-quotes tool - it may be something with my Java installation.
(And one other postscript - a Nokia application I've installed on my PC has "hijacked" the .jar extension that Java uses. It's a real pain to run the Java app when you can't double-click on it and I haven't yet managed to successfully re-associate it back to Java!)Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -
Just a little diversion - I note that some guys are saying that they're still getting updates:
While attempting to get the OFX file import to work I restored a backup file I took mid Jan. When I opened it I was presented with a warning dialog box that said "The following information applies to feature expires which occured 17 days ago, on 01/02/2011. One of more Microsoft Money features have expired. One ot more features have expired. Please update your file online for more information." The options are "Update File Online", "Upgrade" or "OK" (This is the same message I got at the beginning of Feb when I think I clicked "OK"). This time I clicked "Upgrade Now" and, after a short pause Money opened
What did happen though is the share prices have updated for today! However, I don't believe I will received any more share price updates since Money is not recognising the WindowsLive login - (ie, back to the original problem)
Can I conclude that the is some residual MSN Money stuff still running to provide Share Price udpates and could it just be the version of Money that's causing the problem (just to repeat, I'm using Money 2004, V12)?Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -
I too am finding Money is updating again. It has done it yesterday and today.....what is going on?????0

I too am still getting updates to the share prices in Microsoft Money.
It would be helpful to know exactly what is happening as there was a brief period when prices were not updated although the FT Index value was updated throughout.
If anyone has any further information please post it.0 -
mikegreenland and martinfoss,
I'd be interested to know what version you're running and what you have displayed when you go to Tools -> Internet Updates -> Customise Updates which takes me to a "Customise Background Banking" page on which I have the message:
"This file is not secured by a Microsoft Passport. To use background banking, please add a passport"
When I try to "connect" with a WindowsLive login I get an error message saying it can't connect.
Thanks in advance.Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -
Hi martinfoss, I don't use passport and never have. I found it quite a hindrance.0

apparently there was a general problem with data feeds from the LSE earlier in the week (connected to a system upgrade) so the temporary interruption to M2005 background updates was probably unconnected to the program itself or any Microsoft services. Who knows if they will keep going much longer though ....0

Sorry, no I do not use live login either0
