There's a 7 year gap between my son & daughter and the guidelines changed so much between the two. When I had my son we were told never, ever put baby on his back, they must always go on their side or stomach but when I had my daughter it had changed to never, ever put baby on their stomach put them on their back. We were also told to eat lots of liver for the iron when I was pregnant with my son!

I used baby wipes with my son but he seemed to have a constant nappy rash, it would clear up with cream but then come back again so I switched to warm water and cotton wool and he never had any more bother so with my daughter I used water and cotton wool from the start. I did use baby wipes when we went out just for the convenience.

I have had four children and prefer to use my own experience.

I think this is the best thing to do - if you've already had children and know that x is better than y, then do x - even if you're told not to.

I think so. Obviously if its your first you wont have the experience, but after personally spending my first borns first year, stressing about guidelines and trying every guru going, desperate to get it all 'right' i would not waste such a precious time getting overly wrapped up in such things again. Mothers instincts. Most guidelines are there for people lacking in common sense anyways.

When my daughter was born I was told to always put her down for a nap on her tummy. So if she was sick, she wouldn't choke, and lifting her head from that position would make her neck muscles stronger and she'd support her own head sooner:)!

Now if you did that you'd be the world's worst mother!

I used wipes from the start with both mine. They never once have had a sore bottom.
  • People do get so het up over guidelines. It got mentioned today as a work-thing and one colleague went off on a HUGE rant about them changing the sleeping guidelines. Apparently she thinks they've 'fiddled' the statistics for cot death since their reduce the risk campaign. Why?? :rotfl:
  • My friend and I were laughing recently over how we acted with our firstborns and one of the things I mentioned was the use of cotton wool and cooled boiled water for cleaning. I was told off in hospital with my 2nd baby for using wipes and was given a petri dish to get some water in. I just smiled sweetly and carried on with the wipes once she'd walked away. He was absolutely fine.

Our children both slept in their own rooms in a cot from the day they came home and once they were in a routine they napped in their rooms too. I agree with the idea of doing what you feel is best.
  • Pampers all the way. Johnsons gave him a bad rash. If he ever looks a little sore no though i still go back to cotton wool and water rather than creams. It always clears in a day or two.

Like others have said though hang back with anu comments no matter how well meaning. She'll work it out herself. I said no dummies but had to eat my words after 6 weeks of colic induced crying. We all learn eventually with or without mums advice.

Just enjoy being a grandma x

I'll definitely keep my mouth shut as regards advice! I know that she'll ask for it if she wants it and really that was why I posted this question in the first place. It's a long long time since mine were babies and things have changed so much regarding best way to care for them.

My mother in law used to tell me she gave my husband Guinness in his bottle as a baby on her doctor's advice, "to build him up a bit"!! And my own mother kept a massive jar of something sweet and sticky - I think it was called VIROL? - to dunk babies' dummies in and stick it in their mouths whenever they cried! Next morning their faces would be covered in fluff from the blankets sticking to it. And sugar and warm water in their bottles whenever they cried between feeds!

So I just wanted to have a better understanding of today's babycare so I'm not stuck in the dark ages. But my daughter's doing her very best for baby and that's all anyone could ask for.

My sil used to wash the baby wipes out and use them on her ds1 which she found easier than just cotton pads and water.

I am due my first shortly and at our anti natal classes they strongly advised no chemical usage on baby's skin for 4-6 weeks as it's so delicate and there is supposedly evidence of it causing things like excemia (sp) and other skin conditions.

I will remain open minded but have a huge stash of baby wipes in the cupboard.
