RBS internal ratings need more than 6 months to give a good score, prior to that they have a lower score as there is not much history. To improve the score stay out of any unauthorised overdraft, don't have any returns/charges and try and pay in as much as you can, even if you have to withdraw it again.

The system will allow some level of auto approval for loans etc, so is worth having good account conduct.

Which I did have until British Gas c***ed it up

Frankly nothing is going to happen with this, the branch have no control over it and I really dont think any other department are even going to look at it.

    Sorry

You could write a letter of complaint to RBS head office. Irrespective of what your branch manager may have told you, I do not believe the incident with BG is the issue. I would suggest any (young?) customer with only six months financial history is likely to be rejected.

If you do not have a credit card? I would suggest you apply for one, as this will improve your credit score.

A basic Capital One card perhaps?

Six months is no time by the way. As suggested, give it 6 months and try again. Are you on the voters roll? Have you moved around alot?

One tip; open a savings account and set a standing order up into it. Even if it's £5 a week, £20 a month it doesn't matter.

    Sorry

I've been told its been referred but who to I don't know. I don't actually see why my internal credit score can't be put back to where it was prior to this as I have proved it wasn't my fault. Sorry if that sounds petulant but this is making me mad!

I am on the electoral roll and was at my previous address too. I haven't moved around a lot, I just didn't take out any credit at my last address due to adverse which has fallen off now and doesn't show anywhere as I wanted to start with a clean slate.

I have got a Capital one card also as well as Next Directory, Studio, Very and Additions Direct.

    thanks

The internal score is based on account conduct and what happened did happen. What you have to keep in mind is that on a Key Account anyone would have an item bounced in that situation as obviously the account cannot go overdrawn in that way.

The issue is the lack of history with the bank rather than the unpaid item in my opinion.

But it happened as an error by a third party which they have acknowledged and put right - not my fault. I was also told that I wouldn't be charged - but that did happen also.
