if you have sensitive and dry hands it might be better to avoid soap altogether and use a cheap moisturiser like aqueous cream to wash. you need very small quantity and skin feels soft after washingTH0 -
But buy the Boots one, which doesn't contain the foaming agent.0

I cannot take the credit but I read on another OS thread about Ecover Washing Up Liquid being used as liquid hand soap. I was particularly interested in this as I was looking to save some money but I have quite sensitive and dry skin and was wary about using some of the harsher soaps. I bought the ecover wul with camomile and marigold and so far so good.

Thanks Cats :T I'm definitely going to try the Ecover stuff because the thing I forgot to say is that if I use cheaper stuff (like Tescos or Sainburys) it makes my OH's hands itch like mad. And we only use Dove to bath or shower with because shower gel/bath foam/etc make both of us itch. So this seems worth a try if it is cheaper and I suppose it works OK to wash dishes with as well? Please can you tell me where you got it from? You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

You can make your own using this:

The bronners needs mixing with glycerine but makes loads of soap - in a 250 ml pump bottle mix two tablespoons of glycerine with one tablespoon of Bronner's, fill to the top with water and add tea tree or lavender essential oil for antibacterial properties.Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!0 -
They also do a smaller size of the Dr Bronners which i think i'd buy first to test it out, still when you think how much the liquid soap is in the supermarket, it is a lot of money and kids seem to use far too much of it.0

I use Ecover camomile and marigold for washing up and I do find that my hands are often quite dry afterwards although I know it is supposed to be gentle on your hands so maybe it's just me.0 -
I use cheapy tesco creme bath or bath foam with a little bit of water added to it0

Hi mics chick
I got the Ecover WUL from Waitrose, 500ml for 99p, OK not the most you can save but as some of the liquid soaps are twice that price for half the size then not bad. Although I'm sure many of the other supermarkets will stock it or their own brand alternative.
You could get your OH to wash up the dishes first using the WUL to see how he gets on before you fill up the soap dispenser. Although I must admit I always use rubber gloves for washing up because of my skin.
Good Luck

I dont think using a detergent like washing up liquid would be good for skin - they are designed to strip grease off dishes and I think they would be too strong for skin on a regular basis.
Actually having said that I have frequently washed my hands in a little fairy liquidThe early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -
Hi all,
I made some handwas soap as follows:
1 x bar of Castille soap from the £0.99 store (5 bars per pack)
2.5 litres of water
Grated soap into hot water, melted down. Left overnight. Stirred & heated slightly.
Added some jojoba oil and some lime essential oil - lovely :T
Poured some into empty handwash pump and it works very well.
2.5 litres of handwash for £0.20p!
Now - how can I make the same thing, that doesn't need a pump? ie: the above is quite thick-ish and needs the pump to get it out. Even if I add more water I am not sure it will easily come out of a shower gel bottle unless it's the squeezy type of bottle... any ideas?
I would also love to make washing up liquid...
Would love to start discussions on this as I am not brave enough to make actual soap just now - liquid for the time being!MFW #185
