Handwashes contain preservatives and antibacterial agents.

But only a minimal amount-enough to preserve the product as it is, not diluted with more water which is a haven for pathogens.

OP, you're right to be concerned about watering down handwash.

I wouldn't be too worried about watering down milk as it tends to get used quickly and is stored in the fridge which will slow down the growth of pathogens.

I don't buy handwash as I am that old fashioned I buy a bar of soap :):)

One of my friends Mum's years ago used to grate a bar of green fairy household soap and use it to wash her DDs hair Her DD Mary, (my friend) hated it though although she admits she always had the cleanest hair in her class and never ever caught any 'visitors':):)

Me too! I did use handwash for a while, but found that it dried my skin out really badly.

We have one of those handsfree dettol thingies in the kitchen and bathroom... What's so bad about handwash pumps? I do hate the handsfree thingies. Plus my mum's partner's daft enough to buy the expensive refills. They don't last that long and they're about £3 a time I think.

I buy the really cheap foam bath/ baby bath etc for maybe 18p for a big bottle and refill my handwash bottles. I don't worry about germs. I figure, I am washing my hands, rinsing and drying them. Surely that does the job?

I also water down my milk. I was buying semi-skimmed for ages, and have now started to buy full-fat and water maybe by 2 cupfuls for each 4 pint container. If I water it down more than that, it isn't as nice and the family notice. Does the job for me. Has never gone off.

i don't water things down, my oh would freak if i watered down our milk, there'd be a huge rant that we're not that poor we can't afford £1 for a bottle of milk lol

i don't use fabric softener (i have recently cause i got loads on dtd) and for laundry liquid i use half the recommended amount

for handsoap i use value baby bath it's 18p a bottle and lasts about 3 weeks

you can also break dishwasher tablets in half to make them last longer

I have a 30 minute light wash on my machine and as I find that my clothes only are lightly soiled I use that and only half a cap of liquid detergent (usualy Mr Ts non-bio which is around £2.90 for a big bottle that lasts for ages)

Thanks for all the replies. It was the handwash that concerned me more so than anything. I have a 7 year old son, a cat and, a dog so I think anti-bac handwash is a luxury I will continue to use but figure I am saving elsewhere with food and washing powder/cleaning products and although the MS is addictive, its something i am starting in a tough week but want to stick to it when we don 't have to be so careful just to avoid the ridiculous waste and actually eat better(freezing healthy meals instead of buying ready meals!) - just to enjoy more days out, weekends away and not have to scrimp and save to pay debts/bills etc. in the 'bad weeks'
