There's a marked difference in context between a post described as abuse and one in which a member feel the need to use the new "Report Post" button. I think you'll genuinely see a big increase in posts being reported simply because the reportee feels agrieved because someone has disagreed, albeit possibly strongly, with their position. I think you're going to get a marked increase in false reports, for which someone will have to take the time to investigate. If someone doesn't like what's being posted and it doesn't necessarily break any forum rules then isn't it sufficient just to use the Ignore facility.

Changing Abuse to Report is good idea, true it might not change the sheer amount of posts they find themselves having to trawl through each and everyday. We can only hope that members use it sensibly and not abuse such a privilage.

I could be wrong but I am sure MSE originally called it "report". Regardless it is a much less abusive term, than abuse and makes perfect sense. ;)

Thanks for the notes above folks.

One of the main reasons for this is that I want people to understand there is a team running the forum - a bespoke team who look at it every day - and who run the place.

Often we get people emailing other contacts saying "I wanted to ask about my signature or if i could post this link" and even when we say "ask abuse@" they dont like to as its not an 'abuse' issue.

Changing the name is a first step to looking at how we ensure a real connection between those using the forum and the team running it. We're looking and thinking about many things at the moment.

As for friendliness, sadly some boards can be rough and tribal, others are all encompassing and welcoming. We would love them all to flow that way, but it is tough to control human nature.

Just read the posts above some people say 'nothing should ever be censored' others want 'hard moderation' to police all comments. We can't win on this, but we can do our best to keep the forum a useful place to be.

As for the image in the top of teh site I'll take a look and will ask the team to look at the spam button misuse.

It's certainly worth a look and a think, given the text underneath the characters apparently knocking seven bells out of each other is ' Please be nice to all moneysavers' ;)

Thanks Martin and the team for the new ETIQUETTE icon..............but did you know that when you hover your mouse over it, it changes to the old ETIQUETTE icon?

I think it would be better if it didn't show the old (fighting) icon...........especially as non of the other icons change when you hover over them.;)

    Regards

    Hey Nile

I think it's probably cached on your machine? CTRL F5 should sort it out for you.

Thank you for this sensible change. I'd like to suggest MSE takes a long, hard look at the symbol in the Etiquette green box. Two characters apparently duffing each other up doesn't seem to me to be as mature - and clear - as two characters shaking hands is.

Well done on the change. Now all I have to do is ensure power doesn't go to my head :rotfl:

I used the "Abuse" button to report someone who started a thread and was offering to sell credit card numbers, PayPal account details, etc. and got a long email from MSE with all sorts of irrelevant information. Is this normal?

Wouldn't it be better to have an on-screen message that says, "We have recieved your message and will take action if appropriate."? I don't want to be sent spam in response to a spam report!

Anyway, there's another spam thread here: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/41019790#Comment_41019790

It will probably have the same effect as when 'Opal fruits' changed their name to 'Starburst'.
