Rental property a total disgrace

  • Actually, I have dealt with a situation a bit like this with my neighbours a while back. I offered them help, and then advice. They were very nice about it and have never left stuff strewn about again.

This possible rat problem is just that at the moment, a possible one. And I think that you're worrying about this needlessly.

I have a vague feeling that I wouldn't like having someone like you living next door to me. I expect you'll be thinking about going to the police about the colour of their curtains next.

You just dont know what offence people will take or the reaction if you are questioning or enquiring their cleanliness etc.

Thats why I was perhaps going to just put a letter through the door, just not sure what I would put.

I dont want to offend them. Its just tricky.

They are more likely to be offended by a letter, as if they do misunderstand any of it you will not be able to explain. In my experience, talking is always the best first choice.

Thank you. I may just have to do it. Just a little unsure how I would go about it, without causing any offence.
  • Please don't put a note through their door. It can be seen as rather passive/aggressive, especially if said note came from someone living mere feet away.

How about smile and a friendly "Do you need some help shifting those cardboard boxes? Do you know when the collection day is for them? Maybe we can give you a hand with them"

This is better advice, I would do that but I rarely see them, I leave before they go to work and they come home after I do. All I was going to do was put what you suggested above in a short letter. I do think you are right though. So thank you for this post.

You are making excuses (and I think you know it). Take a deep breath, knock on their door, shake their hand, introduce yourself as their new neighbour and offer a bit of help. You have nothing to lose.

    Dan,

You've had similar advice from most posters. You HAVE to go and talk to the neighbour - there really is no alternative.

Why not pop round with a bottle of wine, welcome them to the area and say something like "I remember when I moved in it took me a week or so to get rid of all my crap. If you need any help, or need to know when the bin collections are, just ask"

  • TBS - does your username stand for Total Bull Sh*t??

Listen Dan, l****e, that sort of attitude is not helpful or the way matters should be conducted and unlikely to get you the help you want/need. (I accept admonishment for l****e btw...).

TBS is a very helpful, informed and highly regarded contributor... Wish I had her(?) time, energy & knowledge!!

I completely agree with TBS's comment - go talk to the neighbour for c***** sake!!

Having read through your replies on this thread, I'm guessing that's a problem you have cropping up a lot in your life ...:rotfl:

Now I thought we were spending time making up scenarios for what our usernames could stand for. My mistake.
