Rental property a total disgrace

  • hmmm - you say it's a back garden - is it overlooked from any public places - ie parks, roads etc? if it was the front garden you could report it to the neigbourhood wardens etc and they could just happen to discover it and thus solving the need to involve you - back garden is more tricky.

I have spoken with the rental agency and they said the landlord is managing the property and they cant do anything.

    contact the landlord?
  • I would but I dont know their address, the letting agent wont give it to me. I have done a land reg search but they have put their address as the property itself.

I think I may put a letter through their door, a polite one though.

    Good morning all.

I live next door to a house that is rented out, and the new tenants have just slung all rubbish and empty boxes in their back garden which is a total disgrace.

However what they do in their own back garden etc,
I note that you say "new tenants" - perhaps they are still in the process of getting sorted out?
... but my concern is that the fences on one side of them has blown down and if the one blows down on my side then I dont want to be picking up all the rubbish if it blows through to my garden.
My bolding. So, you are sitting there worrying about something which has not yet happened and which may actually *never* happen?

I have spoken with the rental agency and they said the landlord is managing the property and they cant do anything...
So that was your first move, rather than having a chat with your new neighbours? How to win friends and influence people........
My choice is to confront the tenant or environmental health.

    Is this my only choice?

I dont really want any confrontation.
No, of course it's not your only choice - you can try to be adult and *discuss* your concerns with the new neighbours. It's no good saying that you don't want confrontation when you seem to see confrontation as a suitable method of dealing with people.

Perhaps they don't know where the nearest dumpit site is yet, perhaps they have arranged for a man with a van to clear it, perhaps they just have a different timescale to your own.

Is this more about you, as an OO, feeling affronted that a "mere" T is occupying a neighbouring property?

Do you have a busy life or are you spending a lot of time at home, watching your neighbours?

Given your user name, perhaps you should "man up"?

Confront the neighbour, confront EHO, ring the LA , write to the LL, put a letter through the neighbour's letterbox...blah, blah

For goodness sake, just try talking to the neighbours first.
  • Oh, honestly! What they keep in their garden is their own business. The fence hasn't come down and their carp hasn't been blown into your garden yet and maybe never will. Ergo, you are seeing a problem which may never come to pass.

If you can't have a friendly, neighbourly chat about it and you foresee that as a possible "confrontation" I think that says a great deal more about you than it does your neighbours. Is everyone afraid of doing and saying anything for themselves any more? Why doe any trivial issue have to be someone else's problem to sort out? This isn't even a problem yet. Sheesh
  • And what about the possible rat issue? A garden full of damp soggy boxes, packaging, clothes etc, could possibly attract that kind of vermin.

I think the certain few of you who think you would deal with this in a different way would all feel differently if it was something you were having to deal with yourselves rather than just imagining what you would do.

I have been in that situation and would not hesitate to knock on their door to discuss the matter. If you just go behind their back it will just set up resentment. What are you afraid of?

You just dont know what offence people will take or the reaction if you are questioning or enquiring their cleanliness etc.

Thats why I was perhaps going to just put a letter through the door, just not sure what I would put.

I dont want to offend them. Its just tricky.
