Gonna ring CS tomorrow i think and see what they say, was told a mast was down in end of jan via the facebook group page but even before then and since there has been no change, still poor. Checked the ofcom site finder and there is a t mobile and o2 mast nearby so would expect a better 3g signal once the everything everwhere switchover is done but for some reason they don't know or can't say when that will be, which sounds a bit amateur.

you do know that the iphone has terrible signal strength so if you are getting 1-2 bars solid on a regular phone then that is not going to be the case on an iphone.

i get no more than 2 bars on o2 at my house, but its solid, and the iphone 3gs won't work.

I have add at this point that my iphone 3gs sometimes has shocking signal strength. I was told by a mate, who accidently discovered that if you disable the 3G in network settings, that the phone signal will almost instantly go up...I tried it, and hey presto a full bar signal.

Try it, it may just solve a signal problem.

Was advised as much by Orange CS.
But the big problem I have with that is I'm paying a lot of money every month for an iPhone because it has great speed on the internet.

Turning it off means you only get 2G internet - painfully slow and not what the iPhone was designed for.

Why should I turn it off?
Orange are being paid to supply me with the signal I need.....and so far aren't doing so.

Keen photographer with sales in the UK and abroad.
Willing to offer advice on camera equipment and photography if i can!

Yes putting the phone to just 2g will be better but the point in having a iphone or smart phone is for tinternet and apps and for most of these you need 3g or at best a very strong stable 2g. But for making a call yep switch to 2g.

My current phone, the one with the problems is an iPhone 3GS.

Samsung phone picked up 3G signal at my house.....iphone gets 2G, somtimes.
Iphone struggles to get any kind of internet in urban areas where mates at work get 3G on Vodafone and O2. I'm getting error messages telling my servers are not responding, no internet connection, servier timeouts etc etc
My iPhone drops calls.....some incoming calls go straight to answering service.
Earlier tonight, my iphone displayed "searching"....then went to 3 bar strength....then to 2 bars.
Incidentally, the Orange coverage checker states that Hamilton has "excellent" coverage for all browsing, calls, texts, everything.....yet my phone drops calls, and incoming calls go to answering service.....that means either Orange are lying, or my phone is faulty.

I accept that in places the signal will be weaker but my problems are beyond acceptable....even the guy in the call centre was surprised at the extent of my problems.

EDIT : if it's a known issue as you seem to be saying then Orange missold me the phone - they made no mention of poor reception, weak antenna or anything of that sort. I genuinely didn't know (since before getting this phone, I had never owned an iPhone), so would have expected the seller to declare known issues.

All exactly same problems I'm having. I'm STILL waiting on them phoning me back

And what is the point of turning 3G off? If I wanted 2g I wouldn't have got an iPhone 3G.

They just fob you off with a load of crap! It states online that my area has an excellent signal but I know for a fact that one of the masts has been decommissioned in my area so the online site is wrong

If you are 100% sure that the Orange mast in your area is retired, then that is grounds to cancel your contract.

I cancelled mine because the UMA wouldn't work properly or reliably.

this should tell you where it is, but it won't tell you if its running or not, you'll have to actually go near it and see if there is any signal coming from it.

This site states there is only a vodafone and 02 mast for my postcode
  • Orange Contracts Point 14 and 14.1 State the Device is not part of the Contract, therefore sending the phone back does not form part of any termination of contracts due to faults or services issue's.

Also as some have said DONT have to cancel your contract, thats aload of rubbish.

As the Sales of Goods and Services Act 1982, state you are to have a reasonable service. Yes Mobiles cannot provide fault free service but as a consumer you have every right to expect and receive reasonable service.
