  • Thank you for all your replies.

My dear mother peeled 5 kg whilst I was doing the school run so all I had to do was chop and boil them.

I took the advice of aliama and par boiled some for roasts, tossing them in flour after I had bashed them up a bit.

I chopped some into wedges, blanched and tossed in beaten egg and a Maggi mix for crispy chicken (lemon and herb) to be either frozen or roasted later.

The last batch I have made into mash to top a shepherds pie tomorrow.

Now I just have another 5 kilos to go :D I like the idea of fishcakes so may make a batch of smoked mackerel ones tomorrow.

Here is my efforts so far

5kg is only 2 bags, stick them in the fridge and use them as you need them, they keep for ages. No need to mess about preparing them and freezing them at all. I'm still using potatoes with July on them

Anyone else remember the days when veg & fruit didn't have a sell by date on?

  • My dad turns up usually with reduced stuff too..he is around tonight but our freezer is full so actually hoping he doesn't bring any bargains....!

Also agree on using them as fishcakes, made trout and horseradish ones a while back were good. Croquettes are good too, just fishcakes shaped different really!

You could make gnocchi. Stuffed potato skins. Potato cakes. Not sure how well they freeze though sorry!

  • I know it's only 2 bags but after my dad going to so much trouble to lug them home it would be a shame to stick them in the potato drawer and forget about them. Also have never heard of storing them in the fridge, does this keep them fresher?

kittendothroar Trout and horse radish sound delicious, might have to give them a go thank you :)

Well we had some of the crispy coated wedges for dinner, they were a hit with 6 year old DS but mine and OH's were a bit dry. Maybe because I left them in the fridge all day uncovered?

Last night he turned up with 5 boxes (20) blueberry muffins for £1. Don't worry though, I'm sure I can figure out what to do with them :rotfl:

. Also have never heard of storing them in the fridge, does this keep them fresher?

It's the only place I've ever kept them so I don't know whether they keep fresher than elsewhere, but they do keep in there for a long time. I have a clearout about every 3 months and usually only throw away 3-4 potatoes that have been lurking in the bottom and have gone spongy, other than that they keep perfectly.

Put them in paper bags and they will last for months. Why is it a shame to use them as and when you need them?

  • Hi everyone as I know you are all fantastic frugal cooks thought I would ask for some advise here. We ended last month 900 in overdraft due to many reasons not normally that bad. So this month I have come back here not read the site in months and been following GC plan to join next month as don't really have a budget this month just a spend as little as possible on that note we have no breakfast. We have a tesco order coming Monday night but for tomo there is no bread no cereal just a huge bag of potatoes so I am wondering can I make anything for breakfast with just potatoes. Thank you anyone and everyone who reply.

I was going to say the same. Even if you only have eggs, you could make a spanish omelette which would serve as an amazing beakfast/brunch.
