I think 100, or even 50 is an excessive ceiling. I don't know how many posts I had before I came to this specific board. It seems daft to suggest people have to post elsewhere to get into this board (if it is this board they want to participate on).

Well the current situation with endless sock-puppets is driving away good posters.

Requiring a minimum post count would make it very difficult/tedious to get multiple ID's to work, as well as making people more conscious of not getting banned (and having to go through all that again).

Most logical solution I've heard yet. (In the absence of full moderation)

I don't believ you had to make 100 posts elsewhere before posting Hamish.

Do as I say, not as I do?

On hpc you have to make 100 posts before being allowed to start a thread. Not a bad compromise perhaps.

    But whats your solution?

I'll need to think a little about that one.

My concern is that the suggestion is ill thought out, unfair, draconian, & a bit knee-jerk.

Interesting (but not unexpected) change of tack you have made there by the way...

    That's a good compromise IMO.
But 100 posts before you can access this forum is just silly. I've seen plenty of posters with a post count lower than that who offer valuable input. It would be a shame to lock them out. I can't see them thinking "Okay now I will rack up 100 posts on the savings or housing boards, just that I will be able to access that illusive debate forum."

Look at me, 200 odd posts, but such amazing quality! ;)

Sure those underscore sockies are annoying but until the forum gets properly moderated, they only thing we can do is ignore them and not feed the trolls.

So no better ideas then. (perhaps I should put a sarcastic "not unexpected" in brackets....)

Perhaps, but the constant invasion of abusive sock-puppets is unfair, disruptive and pushing good posters off the board.

Surprised to see you moaning when a compromise is suggested. (no wait, I'm not surprised at all)

Certainly no worse ones, & also highlighting the current suggestion is poor.:)

Not the only reason people will be leaving though. The quality of the board has gone down imo in recent times, so a partial agreement here.

Firstly, check my posts. I'm not the one who is moaning. What I am doing is putting forward the option that the proposal (which is supposedly up for debate, on a debate board) is unfair & draconian. I believe that wheezy has exemplified very well why. Future valuable posters could be lost should such a stance be adopted.

You simply shifted your position, which isn't a suprise. But this kinda highlights how shaky your houses/foundations are when you construct your arguements. Combined with selective responses...

Well the current situation with endless sock-puppets is driving away good posters.

Are you sure about that? Is it really that much of a problem? Are good posters being driven away? Surely everyone who's not partial to the silliness just skims or skips the superficial stuff?

Maybe I don't post enough to come up against it. Ok.

However, me personally, I've not noticed your very interesting and erudite posts being interrupted by twits. Of course I haven't read everything you've posted but I've read a fair bit and I tend to give your stuff a read when I notice you as you're one of the most intelligent and informed writers here so I know that what you say is always worth reading. Ok, you're finding it a nuisance.

No, I'm surprised that you're coming out in favour of more restriction. As I've already said elsewhere, I feel that the boards are already sufficiently bland, and censored and moderated and the abuse button gets rid of outrageous and grossly offensive stuff quite adequately, and that to cut out the bit of fluff and lightweight humour that one or two people add to the mash would be losing something that is an addition and not a chore. And which, as I already say, is easy to skim or skip if it's not to your taste. Personally I find the GOOLIES stuff a giggle. And I haven't been irritated by it, on the contrary, it always makes me laugh.

But, anyway, I take note that to you and RenoMan and some others feel that it's a nuisance and irritation and that you'd rather it was kept out. And, yes, if good writers are being put off and leaving, then, ok, it's a problem and perhaps needs dealing with. Ok, sure.

I had a look at the forum rules and other FAQ texts but couldnt find info on the number of posts newbies have to make on the forum before they can include html links within their text. However, I believe it is as few as 25 posts.

Even having to make a mere 15 posts on MSE boards before being allowed to post on DT and Economy would make it a pain in the bum for AE's. If you think about that GHOULS/CAPITAL_LETTER_USERNAME character, s/he is banned on almost a daily basis, meaning that each day s/he would have to create a new account and post 15 to 25 posts before they could post on the Economy board and then be banned again, to then have to go through the whole rigmorole again the following day.

Is it more unfair and draconian than the existing rule that newbies are not allowed to post html links until they make a set number of posts?

Do you think that the html link rule should be withdrawn on the grounds that it might put off newbies from joining MSE? I assume that that particular rule was in place when you joined?
