Fresh start for 2011

Dear Diary, I have been in a cycle of Debt for over 20 years, i feel embarrased and confused to admit that fact, but i am so determined to now become debt free, i have not worked out how long it will take, but roughly think it will be 2 years, so by March 2013 (Good God , Thats sounds an eternity!!!) I should be owing nothing to no-one. Please can someone tell me what all the abrevriations mean?? DD, DS etc.. please pardon my ignorance.... Hope you can support & help Me , MC

  • Hi Mummychicken!

I am not sure about the acronyms really, but the important thing is you are focused!

I started with a similar level of debt to you, paid off a big chunk of it, went back into it due to totally losing focus, getting my backside in gear again and managing to up my income and really attack my debt!

I would have paid my debt off, but I had to buy a car to start a business that has upped my income considerably. My current debt is £4600 (approx), and I hope to be rid of this within 1 year to 18 months!

Don't lose focus (as I did) and you will get there!
    Loan [STRIKE]£5000[/STRIKE] £0; Overdraft [STRIKE] £700[/STRIKE] £0
    Savings [STRIKE]£0[/STRIKE] +£1500; Share Portfolio [STRIKE]£0[/STRIKE] +£4000
    £0 Credit Card [STRIKE]£6800[/STRIKE] £1700
  • Good luck - am sure you'll do a great job of tackling your debts:T

Thanks to hangingbyathread for making me include myself in the above xx
  • Hi, I have been in that same cycle!! It was always just an acceptable situation and has steadily got worse whilst my income has got much better! It's all a state of mind and for the last 6 months by following advice on here I am turning things around. Is 2 years so long when you think of the last 20!! I think of that and know it will be here sooner than I think and so it will be for you. Keep going, you have made the first step. Good luck.

    Hi Mummychicken :)

Good luck with the debt-busting, you're in good company and I'm sure lots of people will jump in to help.

    The acronyms are:
    OH - Other Half
    DH - Darling Husband
DS - Darling Son (and often there is DS1 for first son, DS2 for second etc,)
DD - Darling Daughter (DD1, DD2 etc if there is more than one)
    DC - Darling Children
    MIL - Mother in Law

Can't think of any more offhand but just shout when there's one you don't know.

March 2013 is only a couple of years and you know, the time is going to go by anyway, so it'll be great to get there and be debt-free, won't it? Many people would give anything to only have two more years before they're debt-free. Give it your all, start seeing those debts go down and you'll be fired up to do even more.:j

    hi mummy chicken, :D

all I can say is you have come to the right place! I had my LBM (light bulb moment (of realising debt)) in Jan this year and joined here and its the best thing I could have done.

You are not judged and no body is nasty - there is only support encouragement and some laughs.

My only regret is I wish I had found it sooner - there are loads of challenges to take part in and lots of ideas and advice on the diaries.

I am sure, like me, you will also become addicted and love it.

Good luck with your debt busting.

PS: I used to wonder why everyone was talking about direct debits 1 and direct debits 2 lol until I learnt the abbs. :D
  • Hi to you all!! How excited am i for your support and kind words, very good to read your words of encouragement toonarmydad- here i am wondering about it taking me 2 years to clear my debts when like you said i have been living with it (or burying my head in the sand) for 20 years!!! Now that i know the abreviations (thanks peaceandfreedom) a little about myself, i have a wonderful DH , 2 DD and 1 DS !!! I work part time, i work nights but am accepting the fact i need to do some extra shifts so that i can chip away at these debts. My Aunt has always been fantastic to me and noticed how low in mood i was over Christmas and new year, she asked me to come clean and so i did.... she never judged, just listened to how i had got into such a pickle with money- i had become overdrawn/used credit cards, took out consolidation loans but still got trapped in the cycle of never clearing it all. Anyway, she was my light at the end of the tunnel, offered the money to clear these debts and i can repay her (INTEREST FREE) £450 a month. I know i am EXTREMELY lucky to have her help and believe me, i am so grateful. I have turned a corner and this time i have the determination to become debt free. I have started the sealed pot challenge & hope to put £10 each Friday into this, i pinched this off someone elses diary!! Have begun my spend diary & also intend to put £2 coins & 20p coins into a money box to see what they accumulate. So, that is kind of a plan!!! Good luck to you all and thanks again for your help & support so far ;)

  • Well, the day started off on the right footing...locked in kitchen, radio blaring and 4 baskets of ironing (where the hec does it all come from?) Then DD1 receives an invite to the cinema , so iam £10 down before 11am, could not say no, she does all her chores without complaint, unlike her siblings! So after dropping her to cinema thought i would pop into Morrisons as kids need yogurts but they are on offer! so i ended up buying too many, then bought aunty (she full of cold) some pretty tuilips, then seen the stir fry veg is on offer.. of course needed milk..... £15.82 later:mad: Really need to take Martin Lewis advice & never pick up a basket or grab a trolley, there is only so much our arms can hold. Anyway, back home & decided to tackle a little gardening, that was relaxing as allowed my 3 chickens to hunt for worms and they rewarded me with 2 eggs- 1 a double yolker!!! Just finished a fab Sunday lunch ( one indulgence i refuse to compramise on) and shared a good bottle of Merlot with DH, that was a left over Christmas pressie , so all ok there. So all in all, £25.82 gone today, not good when i expected today to be my 1st NSD. Need to now pop to aunty to deliver the tuilips, hope someone out there has managed a NSD:D
