And ginvzt, where in Germany - I've spent a lot of time out there (I studied French and German at university), it has lots of lovely places so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And since you have undergone IVF treatment, have you had any side-effects during the pregnancy as a result of the IVF treatment? My DW is suffering from some OHSS-related symptoms, her ovaries are still swollen (they were on Wednesday after the emergency ultrasound following lots of discharge and stressing)...

We have been to Germany before, actually, that is where OH proposed to me! My ovaries are still huge, but doctor is not worried, he still expects them to be bigger than normal at 12 week scan. I have lots of bloating (not always, but tonight was horrid, for excample), other than that - I am just incredibly tired. I had headache once, but I think that was as a result of tiredness and lack of sleep (1 paracetamol solved it - I usually had to take 2 and still not get any better). My skin is better than ever (I always suffered with spots, even though I am in my thirties!), my hair do not need washing daily, although I still do part of the habit.

I had lots of period type pain earlier on, and had some more pains this week, but much less than before.

As for other things - lower back pain is quite bad, especially towards the morning in the bed or after doing more walking or house work. I have got a pain on the left side of my bottom that is not going away no matter what, and I don't know if I pulled some muscle, got a trapped nerve, or is it just one of pregnancy joys? It seem to be worse if I get my leg further behind when walking, have to step to the left, or have to reach something by standing on the left leg more. Will talk to midwife tomorrow - will see what she says.

As for our plans for the next week, we have a huge dilemma ahead of ourselves. Before the IVF treatment, we booked a week in Paris, either to drown our sorrows if it failed, or celebrate and relax if it all worked. My DW is almost refusing to go, now, because she thinks she won't enjoy it. But, in my opinion, it'll be a nice break, a chance to switch off, lie in, relax, and have a nice refreshing citron presse. We've asked for an ultrasound either tomorrow or Tuesday, and if all's ok, we'll go and relax and have fun. If not, we'll have to rely on the travel insurance and cancel.

    Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?

Certainly on week 7-9 I wouldn't have gone anywhere, I got nervous driving to work as I felt like I was going to be sick at any point and wanted to be near a bathroom in case it happened (didn't actually start until 9+1, but when it did it really did). I didn't fancy eating anything, I wanted to nap at any given point, all my joints felt achey and it was quite uncomfortable to walk more than a few hundred metres. While usually I'd be the first to jump at a trip anywhere, in first trimester I'd find it stressful rather than relaxing to have to travel.

But it's not our opinions that matter, it's hers. It can only be what she feels happy with. I found it really hard to explain to my DH how awful I felt until I actually started being sick and he had visual evidence as it were!

I *think* we heard the babies' heartbeat on the doppler last night, it was really exciting. It was a lot faster than mine and really strong.
  • Thanks for all your input. So far, my DW is feeling ok, just very tired. We think that the IVF treatment's led to a lot of water retention that's making her incredibly bloated, and last week she actually had a large amount of discharge (not blood, more liquid) which caused us to be ultra-paranoid and have these extra scans. If it wasn't for the tiredness at the moment, I think we'd be up for running a marathon... :)

As for me needing evidence of how she's feeling, I don't. I think I'm more aware from reading things online and speaking to people here as to what to expect, she wanted to pretend that she wasn't pregnant, and to really run that marathon. I had to tell her no, you're preggers, you can't keep ignoring it. If she's actually sick, that's when I'll run away, but until then, I'm doing all I can. We even did some cooking of some banana fairy cakes which we're taking with, 2 a day, to keep her going between meals. I also bought a thermos flask which we can fill with hot water, so we can have hot drinks while out and about.

All we have to do now is to get through the scan later (we got a confirmed booking for 2:40pm today). We are officially 8+0 today. I'll let you know how things go.

As for ginvzt, the joys of IVF. They never told us about what pregnancy symptoms would be worse as a result of the IVF treatment, I assume you're finding the same? Swollen ovaries and skyrocketing estrogen levels sure don't seem to be making things any easier, do they?

And Kaemi, thanks for your honest feedback. I think that one of the biggest concerns on both of our minds is that whenever we go on holiday, we usually pack backpacks and go hiking around. We leave the hotel at 9am and get back at 8pm. We have food with us, drink with us, and enjoy the day. We hate beach holidays, tried spending one day on a beach in Nice, and got thoroughly bored and decided to never book a beach holiday. Sitting still is not something that comes naturally to us. And that's why we're now somewhat scared of our holiday - we know we have to take it easy!

Morning All. Feeling very much like death warmed up today. Was awake at 5am with my sinus's jam packed. Had 2 paracetamol.Throat still sore. Streaming starting. Seems a very slow to start cold this one! How's everyone else feeling today? No creamping from beany the last few days.
  • Morning RebekahR - and get used to calling the early afternoon morning... My DW has been waking up regularly at 4/5am, so much so that I actually moved into our spare room for a couple of weeks. That way, at least I didn't get woken up, she can read a book/kindle, do whatever she wants, and I'm totally oblivious. Until she goes to the loo, 5 times, and our bathroom door wakes me up every time!

Still, fortunately, we managed to evade the cold/flu that was/is doing the rounds. Seems you weren't so lucky. Apparently, a fever is not good for an embryo so keep an eye on your temp and hopefully you can stop it from rising too much. And if all else fails, remember, it's probably only just a cold - only that you feel ten times worse because of the pregnancy, hormones, lack of sleep and constant need to go to the loo :)

Awww thank you poppet. Hubby is in Las Vegas at the moment! Not back til Friday morning. So thankfully I am not disturbing him. Waking up at 5am is not unusual for me as i'm very good with my fluid intake so always peeing lol. I haven't noticed any constant peeing yet but I am only 4+6 so plenty of time in a few weeks yet. I shouldn't get the flu jab about 6 weeks ago or so. My sister has a little toddler who is now 15 months old this week. He has had a streamer of a cold so think I picked it up from him on Tusday. As I haven't been out since then. Long old incubation period lol.

Well, now that we've come back from today's 8 week scan, I can confidently say that our GP will be happy for us to go to Paris. 15mm CRL, our little aliean has grown 4mm since last Wednesday! The scan was perfect (aside from the fact that the scanner moved so fast, we were unable to actually watch the heartbeat for ourselves, irritating scanner person!) I can now add our scan date, which we received in the post on Saturday morning. Midwife appointment after our holiday, too, so hopefully we have a sticky bean after all...

And for those who are curious, after the IVF treatment, my DW's ovares are approx 4cm in size, and this is at 8 weeks... Crikey! :)

I think mine are bigger... When we went for week 7 scan, they were quite a bit bigger than my uterus! I have a cyst on the left one that is more than 3cm. I hope they calm down soon.

I had another horrid journey home on the train. I was lucky to get on,as there were quite a few people left on the platform. But, I was squashed as a sardine, literally, in the middle, with nowhere to hold, just squeezed in between the crowed. After 15 min I was ringin in my ears, was barely aware of my surroundings, lightheaded and scared that I might not be 'around' fr long. Luckily, the train has arrived at the station, and some people left, and I managed to gra a seat. Instantly felt better.

The other issue is the lower back pain and the bottom pain! It s getting worse, I think, as I am finding harder to stand yup from sitting if I can't use my arms to help lift myself! I hope this is just tiredness and is going to get better soon....

  • Seriously ginvzt, you should ask people for a seat. They'll get up for you, I guarantee it. I used to do a 1.5 hour commute each way and I'd have been standing up the whole time if I hadn't made it known I was there! I used to just say "excuse me, can I just squeeze past you please, I'm pregnant, feeling really rough and could really do with a seat." Then when you get in front of someone in a seat just ask them politely if they'd mind giving you their seat.

I know it sounds a bit extreme, not very British and fair enough pregnancy isn't an illness, but it can blimming well feel like it. If it is seriously making you ill, don't half kill yourself by standing up...people do understand (and even if they don't, they certainly won't say it to your face!)
