We tested Friday morning (party due on Saturday and I needed to know if I was going alcohol free or not!) and I must have called the GP on Monday morning. The sooner the better really so you can get in the system and make sure your scans happen at sensible dates (dating scan must be done in a certain timeframe, moreso if you decide to have the nuchal test). Didn't help that my GP didn't send the referral to the midwives for about two more weeks! Luckily my area doesn't seem to have too much of a waiting list but I know others have had problems getting scan dates.
Don't expect too much of your GP though, it seems often they delegate all responsibility to the midwives, mine was useless but I couldn't self-refer to the midwives so I had to go to him first.
