You indicated that as the beneficiary and executrix of her mother's will, she had become entitled to the shares in 1997 - apparently she did not contacted the Registrar at that point but did so a year ago, sending the original Grant, but received no response.
Presumably she will have an office copy of the Grant (it is usual to ask for a few of these when you wind up an estate because several official bodies are likely to want to see it).
If so, she should send it to Equiniti as requested - special delivery might be best.
If she doesn't have a copy, perhaps the probate registry could help?

But what happens If you don't need a grant because It's a small estate? Would they accept what other banks have and that a death certificate?

I also received one of these weird letters recently. My mother died a few years ago and only had a small estate so I didn't need to go to probate, so don't have a grant of representation etc, etc and don't particularly feel the need to get one.

What do I do about this then? I mean will they accept a copy of her death certificate and utility bills from me?

Mum had only 100 shares in the (then) Abbey national which dividends are paid into our then joint account and at some point I was going to get small estates form and deal with it that way, so is this new company going to try and block that so they can get their cut?

I don't believe she had any other shares as I've been trough her paperwork with a fine tooth comb and this is it.

Like others on here I didn't take kindly to this letter at all.

No company is getting any cut

They will I'm pretty sure accept a claim under the small estates procedure - but they will require an indemnity, etc, from you which may actually cost more than getting probate - which is free if the estate was under £5000

You are totally free to continue ignoring the situation. There is some unclaimed assets legislation being mooted (maybe even enacted - I haven't been following it closely) which means that the government will eventually seize assets that appear to be ownerless.

Yes you will be able get them back - but it will be a lot easier to assert your rights now rather than waiting for it to happen

Well it makes out in the letter If I do not respond within 28 days a tracing agent will be sent after me and that If I decide to accept these assets that the cost of said agent will be taken from the cost of the shares.

So trying to charge me for something I haven't even asked for.

    Nice.

i've just received one of the letters. Is there anyone out there who did not respond within 28 days? Were there any consequences?

Sorry for bumping this up again, but as to the above query has anyone experienced fall out from not complying with this lots requests?
  • Hi,

I'd also be interested, I have BT, LLoyds and Nat Express shares, Eqiniti is registrar for them all and no problems.

Funny how we never hear from the ones that got the long lost monies, only the doubters.

Yes It would be good to hear from anyone who ended up being happy with this service or what the result was of those who chose ignore their letters.
  • I also recently received a letter from Equiniti in regards to my deceased father. I tried to call them but only got a recorded message. I'm do hope they are genuine.
