Equiniti - is this a legitimate letter?

I've been following this thread as I received one of these letters and wasn't sure what to do, but saw an article in Questions of Cash in the Independent yesterday which answers all my questions. I'm a new user so I can't post a link, but it looks as though this is all above board - I'll reply to their letter and report back.0

Just to let people know ( I see there is still some debate on here about these letters...).
My dad got one of these letters a few weeks ago, and after a bit of digging did send them proof of address.
Last week he got a letter from them confirming he was due some money, and with a cheque attached.
It was (as far as I can tell, I've not actually seen it yet) dividends from 200 shares in Friends prov that he was given as part of the building society being floated. There is a small payment itemised from each year from 2004 (IIRC) up until 2009 when FP was bought up entirely by another bank.
He got about 36 quid, and then Equiniti took a charge of 12.50 for issuing the cheque. Seems steep, but as it's money he didn't realise he had he has cashed the cheque and spent it on a takeaway :-)
So to sum up, it's all legit (assuming you are asked to send proof to equiniti - check their addr on their website) but if it's related to friends prov, don't expect to get rich :-)
Still, better than nowt!0 -
Hi I am new to this forum & read all the links re- Equiniti cos' today I received the standard letter that everyone seems to keep getting from Equiniti. I am not an old person, well at least I don't think I am ha ha, I think this letter is genuine & not a scam, the connection is through Friends Provident. A few years ago I opted to sell my shares to the new people who were taking over Friends Provident can't remember their name. For some reason after selling there was a tiny amount of shares still left in my name, I get a cheque from them twice a year, from whatever profit it's made throughout the year. Not a large cheque "wait for it" the grand sum of 60p-90p depending on how well the shares have done. The cheque & letter come from Equiniti. I haven't bothered to cash in the cheques so I think this is why I got my standard letter. So out of curiosity I'm sending documentation off to Equiniti to verify who I am. So watch this space, I will post on here whatever reply I get.
The plot thickens eh! regards JEMLADYBIRD :cool:0 -
Is it not possible to bypass Equiniti and go direct to Friends Provident or whoever now owns them?
Taking £12.50 out of 36 quid seems a bit steep. This is not financial nor legal nor property advice. Consult a paid professional if in doubt.0 -
Hi,
digging up an old thread.
Just curious if any of the Equiniti doubters will be applying for Royal Mail shares, as Equiniti are the registrars.0
