You'll probably find that the blankets have loads of starch or similar in them, usually happens to make it easier to manufacture. A couple of washes and they should soften up. Mummy to an amazing little girl0

Not sure - I did buy a couple so I would imagine they must have felt quite soft or I wouldn't have bothered. As garnettlady says though they are usually quite starched in the shop & improve after a few washes.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -

Ok thanks ... it was definitely the apparent hardness of them that put me off. Is there a reason cellular blankets are supposed to be used? I never had any last time. I feel really silly asking, but I see them everywhere and have no idea why I need them, or if I do!Olympic Countdown Challenge #145 ~ DFW Nerd #389 ~ Debt Free Date: [STRIKE]December 2015[/STRIKE] September 2015

Can I please have urgent opinions on swaddling blankets, a friend had recommended getting one, I used to wrap DD in a blanket swaddling style as she would startle herself awake but she would always wriggle out . My friend has used a proper one like this
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-3904.aspx
Has anyone used one? I'd need to order today as I'm getting induced Mon/Tues
I've not used one yet but have brought one exactly like that from Tesco only a different design.
When DS and DD were born swaddling was frowned on - for the over heating aspect mostly and they didn't sell those swaddling wraps but like you I used wrap DS in a blanket as he didn't like his arms and legs being so free at first.
Hopefully somebody will be along soon to advise who has used one of these already0 -

I think it's to do with the breathability isn't it? - them being cotton and full of holes!0 -

Are they supposed to be? I know that sounds really daft coming from a mum of nearly 4, but I had softer blankets given to me for the others, or hand-knitted. This time I'm buying from scratch.
they do 2 types. the cotton ones are hard they are a bit better after washing but not great. thy do acrylic ones as well which are softer but.. not cottom.
I got brushed cotton ones from dunelm which are lovely think the cotbed ones were £6.99 each but they are very soft and cottonLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Yeah so if they get them over their head they can still breathe. Acrylic ones can be used if it's cold, but not recommended all the time as they're more likely to overheat in them than cotton. Mummy to an amazing little girl0

Re the blankets, I never got the hang of swaddling, so just put a blanket over DS, which he would kick off constantly as he was a wriggly little thing. That was until I discovered Grobags - found them a Godsend. Is anyone planning on using them from birth? I am toying with the idea - I know you can't use them for babies under 7lbs, but I highly doubt my baby will be under this weight. I found it really handy to use the Grobag thermometer, which tells you what layers and tog to use at what temperature. Made me a bit paranoid about keeping a check on the temp of the rooms for months, but I felt secure with this.
Alfalfa - how did the sweep go? x

Oh.. grobags are half price in tesco at the moment £15 something.. I got 4 for Squeak.. they had cream ones, pink flowered ones and ones with trains.. 1 and 2.5 tog and 0-6, 6-18 and 18-36. They are still BOGOF in mothercare as well i thinkLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
