  • it seems to me like they are looking for any excuse to either not pay HRM to us blindies or they are just dragging things out as long as they can , untill the government just totally get rid of dla and then when the new PIP comes in they can get rid of more peole who were getting DLA.
i went down to london for the protest march on government to start them changing the DLA for us , and initially they said it was going to be anyone who is registered blind, now they changed the goal posts , no doubt they will keep changing the goal posts. But to be fair they do need to keep their expenses fund topped up, go forbid a politician should have to go without all there benefits.

    Bump

Can anyone give me a bit of advice please.

I got rejected for higher DLA, now after getting my eye results back am not sure if i should appeal or not.

Can only read top line of eye chart with one eye cant read anything with other.

On form it has left eye 6/120 is that the same as 3/60? does that mean i qualify?
Right eye has cf as i cant read anything on chart not sure what that means.

also SPH is -2000 in right eye and -200 in left.

Axis is blank on right eye but has 180 in left.

Not really sure what all this means, any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thankyou.

I had letter stating i dont qualify a couple months ago.

The rules to qualify in my opinion are totally unfair. DLA mobility is supposed to be for mobility help and is based on how difficult it is to get out and about etc. So, why is it, that there not taking into account the field of vision loss people have??

I have Retinitis Pigmentosa and it affect night vision first and the field of vision and then over time general vision. I can still manage to read the top 2 / 3 lines hence why ive not got HRM. Ive heard a saying that sums up RP...'i may beable to see a pensil on other side of a room, but will fall over a elephant to pick it up'

Lets take that top letter from the chart in acurity test (lets say its 'T')
I stand 3 metres away from a large wall. Standing next to me is John who qualifies for HRM as he cannot quite read the top letter.
The letter 'T' is stuck in a random place on the wall. John and i open eyes at same time and John spots where it is straight away but carnt quite tell its a letter T. I on the other hand, a couple minutes later find what clearly is a letter T. If this was done in low light then id proabbly never find it.

So clearly from my example, i find life a lot harder to get around day to day than 'John' But becasue John cannot read the top letter 'T' he is classed worse????????????????????????????

So my point is that i feel i am more disabled as far as mobility issues than someone who qualifies under acuity test. How is this right?

My Brother, who is a little worse than me has been told he is unlikley to get HRM and he even has a Guide Dog!!!!!!! System is wrong!!!!

I must be one of the few that don't know the new rules for the dla, will have to look them up.

    Is your brother registered blind?

Something has to be done about this if the dla don't take into consideration range and low light, I wasnt aware of that

I thought the test for being registered blind or partially sited was by taking into consideration the range combined with sight to get the result. do they count low light too such as in rp for registration?
    Thanx

  • i was registered blind in 2001 and i now know quite a few other people, blind or partially sighted. but in my opinion it seems to depend on the doctors view as to whether someone is classed as blind/severely sight impaired or sight impaired. i have met people who seemed to be worse off sight wise than me but only classed as visually impaired. i went on the protest march to downing street all those years ago to protest about the unfairness of the fact that we couldnt get higher rate. but since the decision was made to give us the higher rate, they just kept changing goal posts. its wrong i think how it will always depend on one persons opinion against anothers at to whether someone might qualify for the higher rate or moreover as to whether they are stated as being severely or just sight impaired , the difference in those two words can make such a big difference on a persons life and well being.
in 2008 i was the Blind Triathlon World Champion and even to enter i had obviously to prove i was legally blind(which is only rightfull) , but to get the Higher Rate Mobility i had to jump through hoops and appeal.
comes down to the fact that governments just dont want to or actually care about giving help to people, unless theres an election due then they come out of the woodwork to be seen as our freinds..............

Does anyone know or have any idea what will happen once DLA changes into PIP? Will those that are blind still receive help with mobility from the 2011 April rules? I've tried to have a look at all the information online but it's so confusing to me.
    Thankyou.

The following peice i am posting will be from a website called Benefits and Work. there is a petition near the bottom for anyone to sign online if they are against the governments changes .

Stop Press: Spartacus Report lead author Sue Marsh will be on Newsnight tonight (Thursday) head-to-head with employment minister Chris Grayling. Good luck Sue.

    Dear kiffy,

It’s not often we get to celebrate here at Benefits and Work. So there has been enormous delight at the government suffering three – or possibly two - unexpected defeats in succession in the House of Lords over welfare reform

But if you want real joy, then please take part in the fight to save DLA. It really is possible - but only if you act before Tuesday’s vote. Please help to nail the latest government lie that you’re actually in favour of axing DLA.

Also in this newsletter, the shameful revelation that DWP decision makers can now have your appeal struck out before providing any evidence at all. They just need to tell the tribunal clerk that you said on the telephone that you no longer wished to continue and that’s it.

YOU CAN SAVE DLA BY TUESDAY
Last night, in victories that shocked even the most optimistic campaigners, the government was defeated in the Lords on three votes in succession. (Open access)

The welfare reform bill was amended so that ESA in youth will not be axed, many cancer patients will continue to be exempt from the work capability assessment and contribution-based ESA for claimants in the work-related activity group will be paid for two years instead of just one.

Of course this isn’t the end of the matter and the government will now try to overturn their defeats. But they are looking in real trouble and compromises will have to be made.

Although, by what many people will regard as an underhand trick after most peers had gone home last night, Lord Freud succeeded in sabotaging the reinstatement of ESA in youth (external link), by limiting it to current claimants only.

Outrage amongst Labour and crossbench peers at the ‘unprecedented’ contempt for the will of the house scared him off using the same trick on the other two amendments, however. His shabby trick also looks likely to have now made crossbench peers really, really cross with him. Something he may regret next week.

The vote this coming Tuesday will be on axing DLA and replacing it with personal independence payment (PIP).

We’ve already told you about the excellent Spartacus Report (open access) which was launched on Monday and which offers convincing evidence – the government have yet to deny it – that they misled parliament over the huge level of opposition from disability organisations to their plans for DLA.

The report has caused an enormous stir on the internet (open access), generating literally millions of tweets and thousands of downloads from its first day and is now breaking through into other media, although some of its authors have paid a high toll in terms of their health.

It has gained high profile support from writers, politicians and celebrities and is unquestionably playing a part in changing the views of peers. It even, astonishingly, received strong endorsement from the Daily Mail online, (external site) not once but twice (external site).

However the government now seem to be claiming that although disability organisations aren’t in favour of PIP, the majority of individuals who responded to the consultation were (open access).

Benefits and Work readers have already responded magnificently to our request on Monday to help launch the Spartacus Report. We’re now asking for your help to nip this latest government lie in the bud.

THREE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO CHANGE THE FUTURE RIGHT NOW
We’re asking Benefits and Work readers to do three things.

    1 Sign Pat’s petition.
Pat’s petition asks for the same thing that the Spartacus Report wants – a pause and a proper consultation before further ‘welfare reform’ takes place. A huge surge in signatures before next week’s debate is the simplest way to expose the monstrous lie that disabled people support these reforms.

We know some people fear it might be risky to give a name and address on a government website, as you have to in order to sign this epetition. But more than 14,000 people have already taken that ‘risk’. And if ever there was a day for taking a chance to save your benefits, surely this is it.

You can add your name to the petition here and nail the government lie (external site).

sorry about that i think you will have to go onto benefitsandwork.co.uk to find the link to the epetition.
the website is a great wealth of information and help

You'll just get re-asessed like the rest of us, even those of us who were told many years ago they were 'Disabled for Life' and made life changing decisions based on that classification.
