My wife suffered a sub arachnoid haemorrhage in 1997 & was registered as partially sighted after discharge from a 2 months stay in hospital ( she lost all of her sight at the time of the haemorrhage but a little sight returned in one eye one week after surgery).

She was registered blind in july 2005 & visual acuity on the BD8 form reads right eye "L 6/60" & left eye "6/18". Best with both eyes open reads "6/18". Not sure what the "L" means in the right eye acuity reading?

The field of vision column reads "Extensive loss of visual field including hemiaopia"

She can see nothing through the right eye & describes her vision through the left eye as looking through a drinking straw.

Se has had no contact regarding ther new rules as yet.

she should contact them.#i also have vision of 6/18 with no peripheral sight, and will not be getting hrm.
her sight will be judged on her 'better' eye and so it is unlikely she will qualify.
it seems you can have really severly ristricted vision, but as long as you can read 2 lines of the chart you can still see to well!

I would try to ring the DLA up, they won't let you speak directly to the department dealing with it but will contact them for you. My OH wasn't contacted either so that's what he did. I wouldn't leave it too long either as I don't think that they will be backdating late claims.

Thank you nannytone & celbelle. I will contact them this week.

As the bd8 form was dated 2005, i wonder wether it would be a good thing to have her sight tested again? (if this is possible).

The ophthalmologist that registered her blind mentioned that there had been considerable deterioration since he last saw her,due to atrophy of the optic nerve.

I think it would be worthwhile for your wife to be re-tested, my OH did this as he didn't have a copy of his BD8 and his eye sight had decreased. He had to go to his Dr's and get referred to see the eye consultant and they issued him with a new CVI which we've sent off to DLA.
