  • Hi,
I just read that costco are selling coffins.

wonder if they do a BOGOF?
I wouldn't mind paying for one but I wouldn't want to keep it at home

You could stand it on its feet, fix a little rail at the shoulders, and hang some blouses or shirts in it.

Or, use it as an ottoman, handy for storing bedding.

OK so what I've found is..

You can buy a cardboard box for £110 + £50 for delivery ( for a box!!!)

A wicker / willow / bamboo coffin for £430 all in.

From a funeral director £330 - £400 for a no frills veneer coffin (without their services).

    IMHO it's crazy !
The price charged for a coffin from a FD depends on whereabouts in the country they are. I would guess they charge far more in Surrey than Sunderland.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I called two in Wiltshire, not exactly a metrpolis of activty or wealth...
they did say it would be cheaper if I used their services.

When it comes to it it won't be me waiting, so I can ''live'' with that :D
:rotfl: I'd want to ease the stress for those left behind though.
I'd be happy to buy online. I'm happy with a cardboard one. To be honest, I'd be happy to be squashed into a big cardboard box....its not as if I'll be uncomfortable.
while we're on the dark humour, Dad died at the start of last year's Big Freeze. He'd been in hospital, but they said they would dress him, so mum sent in t-shirt (as vest), shirt and cardigan (and trousers and pants). however the hospital sent back the shirt and cardi. Mum was worried he'd be cold. I said "not for much longer!"

make it big enough to allow for growth and you could sleep in it! :rotfl:

you say you're enquiring with a view to use for someone else (we won't ask!) but are they happy with these arrangements? it helped us to know that dad would have liked what we were doing.

Yes, they are concerned with the ever increasing price of absolutely everything and don't want the family to be left with a huge bill. So I've been asked to look into a 'nice' solution.

It's not the easiest thing to talk about at the best of times, so it's nice to see people with a sense of humour on here. I'm trying to find affordable solutions, which I can then print off and take around next time I visit....

At the moment I've got a picture of a cardboard box and a wicker coffin.... it's going to be a short conversation at this rate.

I have now corrected my typo! SLEEP in it. It's been done in the past, btw. I had a book called London Stories, big fat red thing with thick pages, there was a chap in there who slept in his coffin for years.

However when I googled to try and find more details, the results on page 1 were a lot more recent than that ... you should try it, sleep in coffin

And DH thinks my friends on MSE are weird ...

  • Looking at the poll 65% would be happy to purchase their own, potential wake up call for funeral directors.

But then what do people see as an acceptable price to pay for a traditional looking coffin without the services of a funeral director ?

£330 - £400 for a bit a chipboard and veneer seems steep to me.

so little choice... such a big rip off !
