My Dad had a Bamboo coffin and yes it did resemble a picnic basket, but he was buried in a Green Burial site so I think that there was only the choice of that or a cardboard one. (hence my mothers advance purchase)

BTW The more posts I write on this thread makes me realise just what a strange family I have...................

You can blame me I started it... ha ha
  • Anybody thinking of a wicker coffin, please consider your pall-bearers' comfort. My Ex helped to carry my grandmother's wicker coffin, and the ridges of the wicker weave really dug into his shoulder, he said it was very painful.

I don't think its just the wicker ones then. I carried my gran in a traditional one and the bottom edge dug into my shoulder as well. I think the bearers must wear padded shoulders for the job...
  • Really quite shocked at the 'power' of the community and the response to the poll. Thanks all for voting.
Still on my quest to find an affordable solution. Will keep you updated.

They defo look nice and I would consider one, but don't think I can justify the cost.

Ah yes, but consider the savings you'd make on the other stuff such as a head stone and flowers.

Most people choosing a Bamboo/wicker or cardboard coffin will probably be opting for the Green Burial site option, thus meaning that there won't be the other stuff to fork out for as there won't be a headstone etc.......

Does anyone know anyone that has purchased / used one of those wicker coffins ?

Are they really worth the £400+ ?
I've seen one in use, it looked a bit too airy for me ...
My husband just came over to see what I was laughing at and gave me a weird look when I said, "It's a thread about coffins"....
DH says I have weird friends, he's just been to have a look at why I'm laughing.

I will try to remember to ask my lipreading pal who works for an undertaker.

I just read that costco are selling coffins. From what I can tell this is just in the US. I don't see anything on the uk web about this.

Has anyone got a costco near them, and have they seen coffins for sale ?

Aren't we normally a decade behind adopting what the US does... so my thinking is at least my kids will be able to get me one on the high street :-)
I'll look next time I'm there. They had a massive speedboat last time, IIRC. Even harder to store!

How the knickers do people know what size they'll be when they kick the bucket?
I love your phrasing ... but I think you're one of the ones my DH thinks is weird!

I think you pay for the privilige of going green though. Everything that has 'green' all over it is normally double the price regardless of headstones...

I've created such a large list of things to check.. double what I had before starting this thread. Guess its a good thing.
