Yeah, not something I thought about until I was asked to think about it, then realised just how expensive this business is...
    Appreciate your input.

My Mum never wanted us to waste money on a big funeral when she died, she always told us to stick her in the Wheelie Bin.

I promise to bring it back next week, our binman doesn't come until Monday.

  • I just looked down the list of subjects in the forum. I think I'm the only one with a poll.

Nice little tool people should use IMHO, encourages interaction.

Now its my aim to get it up to 100 votes :-)

When it comes to it it won't be me waiting, so I can ''live'' with that :D

I'd be happy to buy online. I'm happy with a cardboard one. To be honest, I'd be happy to be squashed into a big cardboard box....its not as if I'll be uncomfortable.

I wouldn't care what I ended up in myself. But if I was organising a funeral for a family member, I wouldn't want to have to worry about whether the coffin arrived in time for the funeral, plus the cost of delivery would probably outweigh any savings made by buying it online.

I was discussing this topic just the other day1
My personal opinion is that FD'S and the like cash in on grief.
If a bride was quoted £300 for 1 flower arrangement she'd probably have a screaming fit but when quoted for an arrangement to go on top of the coffin nobody flinches as they don't want to be seen as a skinflint or that the deceased person is not worthy of that amount of money.
I have friends in the flower arranging business who will only do funeral flowers because they are the easiest way to make money. In her words (not mine) people are so consumed with grief they don't have the energy to haggle over prices or moan about the quality of the flowers. This just confirmed what I had long believed.

What seems to be forgotten is that funerals are for the living .

OK so what I've found is..

You can buy a cardboard box for £110 + £50 for delivery ( for a box!!!)

A wicker / willow / bamboo coffin for £430 all in.

From a funeral director £330 - £400 for a no frills veneer coffin (without their services).

    IMHO it's crazy !

I suppose the cardboard one may be as cheap as you're likely to find? They have to be strong to be able to take the weight of the body so I suppose they are never really going to be cheap.

I'd not even thought about the flowers !!! OMG £300 for a flower arrangement. I can get a service on my car for that sort of money.

Blimmin crazy if you ask me !
