 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Funnily enough,I have had to start reading labelling recently, and the lettering definately has got smallr- especially when there are 4 or more versions of ingedients in various languages. I agree low energy ligyhtbulbs dont help!!!

this is how Im coming to the conclusion I need all the help I can get!

I think the small print and the funny supermarket lighting make it worse. I can read them in proper daylight it's the artificial lighting is poor substitute.

My Oh say's read this for me and now I can't. :(

Aliasojo did you find your changes in sight has been quite sudden? It probably has been gradual but I feel as if I was fine one day and then next I'm struggling. :undecided

Yes it did kinda seem sudden. I knew my eyesight wasn't as sharp as it once was, but it seemed to go from 'read the label' to 'not read the label' from one shopping trip to the next. :o

I was supposed to wear glasses from age 11, but didn't bother with them until I was about 19 or so and couldn't see well enough to find the right bay in the bus station.

I quickly got some contact lenses and wear them every day now, only put my glasses on when I get in from work.
  • I am blind as a bat so have always worn glasses and switched to contact lenses as soon as I could afford them.

However I have a friend who has terrible eyesight but refuses to admit it as she is too vain to wear glasses. We were strolling along to the shops last week when suddenly she went charging into the road shouting "quick - that duck's about to get run over". The "duck" was actually an empty waitrose carrier bag!

If you only need some reading specs then Im sure it wont cost much.
even if you go for the multi-pair approach. Don't think I've paid more than £2 for any of my pairs.

So true! Also the lighting does make a BIG difference: I have reading lights in the lounge and dining room (where I do most of my reading) and don't need my glasses there all the time.

I've been out for meals with my parents and their friends and they've had one pair of glasses between about a dozen of them and they've got to pass the glasses around so that everyone can look at the menu!!
:rotfl: I was at a wedding on Saturday: the bride wanted to read something in the reception but no-one had brought her glasses, so suddenly half the room are passing specs to her. I'm pleased to say that my small pink ones from my handbag were the best.

I have pairs in the lounge, bedroom, dining room and car. Also in my handbag, and there's a generic work pair which I share with a colleague - someone left them in the office ages ago!

I do have a magnifying glass in the dining room too (adjoins the kitchen) but you then need two hands (one for the magnifying glass and one for the object) and those have been in short supply here.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • It's a conspiracy! The words on labels ARE getting smaller ;)

I'm in the same boat as you OP. I need to get an eye test and keep putting it off.

I can never understand why someone who needs glasses won't wear them? I started wearing glasses when the only ones for children were the plastic ones in pink, blue and black. Now they really were hideous but as they improved my eye-sight of course I wore them. I wore glasses when I married as wihout them I would be peering at anything which is definately a worse look than glasses. I remember a friend who wouldn't wear her glasses when she got married as she didn't want to have them on in her wedding photos but to me it just doesn't look right as she always wears glasses.

Also to point out that everyone especially the over 40s should have an eye-test every two years whether or not they need glasses or have any problems. This is most important in any-one who drives or uses a computer which covers most of us these days.

I took to it as well as you'd expect a 13 year old who'd also just got braces to!! However after a month of feeling sorry for myself I realised how much better life was when you can see!

The opticians cheery comment at my last check up that my short-sightedness was improving as I got long sighted in middle age failed to impress me - I'm only 37!!

  • Right own up who can actually make out any body shop labels?!! Even with my glasses it is a nightmare.
