No Buying Toiletries in February Challenge

It's the charities that ring you at home and then try to guilt you into paying a monthly subscription over the phone. The childrens ones are the worst (IMHO). They hear your kids in the background and then roll out the old spiel about how would you feel if this was your child?
I went mad at one over the phone once because she would NOT take no for an answer. I said "How dare you ring and try to guilt me into paying towards your charity when you have NO idea what my financial circumstances are. I have already told you that I'm struggling to make ends meet and that my husband is in danger of losing his job due to the recession and you won't leave it. If you ever ring me again I will report you for harrassment. I won't actually ever contribute to your charity now on principle. Thank you and goodbye". Gah! I was seething. There is so much pressure from these people and most of the funds raised is wasted on marketing.
Charity shops get me too, the idea of giving was that it was 3 fold. The donator no longer wanted/ needed the item so gained space and a warm fuzzy feeling, the charity gained money from the sales and the people who couldn't afford to buy new were actually able to buy products. A by product of this was that stuff was kept out of landfill too. Nowadays, the stuff in them is (IMHO) way, way overpriced. I have been after a dresser for my dining room for a considerable amount of time and just can't afford to pay what they want for one in a charity shop. I've seen one in town nd shall go and look today but I fully expect the price to be way out of my league.
DS needs a chest of drawers for his bedroom and also a desk but he doesn't have the space so we're going to try and get him a bureau. I saw a not very nice one in fact, lots of not very nice ones, in local shops which they want >£85 for. Most are damaged. We saw a lovely one in a second hand shop, very good condition £80. I feel more inclined to buy the £80 one even if they were the same product because the second hand shop has to buy it's stock and pay business rates to the council etc. They have to make a profit and they are STILL able to sell better quality for cheaper prices than the charity shops.
It's funny (sad) because very, very occasionally, I will grab a bargain from a CS but it's more likely to be a glitch or an error rather than representing good value for money.
Oooooh, ranty Kaz! Terribly sorry!
I might actually UU the toothpaste tonight. We'll see!
Have you registered your phone number with the telephone preference service, you can do it on line or on the phone and then cold callers cannot ring you, if one does they are not the legal ones.
I agree re pricing in charity shops, it's like the pricers have never been shopping themselves and seen the prices of things new. I bought my son a next hoody in our local charity shop for 99p ( a bargain I thought), when he grew out of it it was still in very good condition so I gave it back to them, I later saw it on their rail for £2.50:eek:The devil makes works for idle hands0 -
well I have made it through the month with out any other purchases, then those mentioned. (Shampoo, toothepaste, deo, and a hair dye).
I also was gifted, a selection of Perfumes from my partners daughter again! All part used but all greatfully received, inside a FCUK, box, similar to a box I was given last year, and so will look good for storage of my sewing bits and bobs!.
I am aiming to continue with this challenge for March. Sorry I cannot keep up with it. I subscribe to too many threads, and spend far too much time on here! When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
a last thought on charities!I have just emailed the solicitor who is dealing with my late cousins estate. She died nearly 3 years ago and I am still waiting for the small bequest she left me thanks to a charity:mad:
She left most of her money to a large dogs charity(lets not go there!!!!),part of her estate was a doll collection and the solicitor had the agreement of the beneficiaries to give them to a local group she used to be a member of.However the "charity" objected and so the dolls had to be sold at a specialist auction which is why I am still waiting for my money. The solicitor said there was always trouble with the big charities as they were so greedy. It seems so stupid to me that they would rather wait 3 years for a few more £s(the dolls could only have got a couple of hundred £s at most)than be generous and get their money to use for the dogs sooner.0 -

Oh dear. It's so sad to hear these charity-gone-bad stories. I too have become dis-illusioned with some of the large charites - I won't list any here because they do still do a lot of good work and I would still rather they existed than not. I really think it's awful that children's welfare should be dependant on charity though. I'm sure that most of the fund raisers are no better than mercenaries (sp?) though and not actually linked otherwise to the charity - next time they call, ask them how much THEY give to it.
I raise money for a local charity. I spend the money on cat food and FEED it to them, then clear it up when it comes out the other end  - so I know exactly where every penny goes :rotfl:. Also support a donkey/horse charity (The Brooke). I told them from the start I didn't want any marketing, correspondence NIL. They have complied with this.
A few outs to report today gone to good causes: Next body souffle, and wash (minis), cleanser and toner (minis), Estee Lauder eye shadow set, and mascara.Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!0 -
I know, Vicster, I was stunned by it! I really couldn't believe it, and despite the third time of my asking them not to, they still send me begging letters!
The British Legion do well out of it though
I've not bought anything since joining, I've UU or got rid of more than 20 bits and bobs, and I think I can get through March without buying anything too! Am very glad to have found this thread - I needed the kick up the backside to use stuff that was gathering dust.
See you all next month xSome days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....
LB moment - March 2006. DFD - 1 June 2012!!! DEBT FREE!
May grocery challenge £45.61/£1200 -
I have spied a new Lee Stafford Argan oil product in Boots - was really tempted as I would like to try the morrocanoil but the price puts me off! My question is though has anyone tried the Lee Stafford oil or the morrocanoil and is it any good?! I am hoping some of you may have tried them!?
UU's a dove intensive body cream sample and a Vaseline Intensive sample, used them both up on my legs as I have decided I need to get the sachets and samples used up before I crack open another bottle of something.0 -

Nice haulif a bit naughty (not that I can talk!) - yes, think we are going to have to crank up the naughty step for March - polishing it sounds harsh but fair!
Think we need some more pis on here they are such fun - a few people posted their BS voucher hauls on that thread, it was like you were sharing their shopping experience!
My bestie and me have agreed today we MUST improve our willpower in march. Please no more mention of the Glamour magazine....she is really struggling with that one...:eek:Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!

Sadly it's probably not the charities but the solicitors/legal people in between driving this greediness. Or 50/50.Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage
