This is largely already in place - in *addition* to repayment and/or other administrative penalty, there's a 4-week no benefits sanction for even a first offence of benefit fraud. If a claimant commits two frauds within five years, it's a 13-week sanction.
These are known as One Strike and Two Strike sanctions.
The benefits regime is simply not as easy as you think it is.0 -

We should all be concerned about this fraud. TBH when someone shouts really loudly about nosey parkers etc it just makes me wonder what they themselves have to hide or worry about.
lol Why because someone dare point out to you that maybe [shock horror] you don't have all your facts on these people and that your admit but your happy to report them any way? I'm thinking you need a hobby to get yourself out of other people's life's so much.
And if you were meaning myself or any one else on here in regards to having something to hide? well sorry to be a kill joy but sadly no not me but you can always accuse me and others because after all you don't have your facts and it's what you do best, RIGHT?The day I had my Beautiful son is the day everything came together for me. For someone so small he done so much and made me complete.0 -
I agree that people should have the facts.
I do not agree that it is not their business.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
A damn site more money is wasted by DWP mistakes and error than benefit fraud, but i dont see people kicking up a stink about it...[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
[/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -

Unless you're with someone 24/7, you're very unlikely to have full facts.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

If I suspect that someone is claiming public money that they are not entitled to then it becomes my business. It should be the business of all of us. The more that is paid to fraudulent claimants then less remains for genuine people. If all claimants were told they were going to have a 10% reduction in their payments to balance the books because of fraudulent claims i bet they would be looking for fraud to be stamped out.
We should all be concerned about this fraud. TBH when someone shouts really loudly about nosey parkers etc it just makes me wonder what they themselves have to hide or worry about. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Here's an article in the Guardian where the journalist reports on DWP employees who investigate suspected benefit claims. Some of the fraud team are actually sympathetic to the fraudsters - Staff admit that a large proportion of people who commit fraud are not motivated by greed, but do it because they are struggling.

Very interesting (and long) article, illustrates clearly how a false or malicious accusation can ruin a life~*~ If you don't need it, it isn't a bargain ~*~0 -
