If she goes to City, I think we'll be getting the train as it states there is no parking, so we'll take 2 suitcases each and drag as much stuff as we can to her room. The hamper idea is great, I was going to do that, might even send food parcels! She's a vegetarian and lost quite a lot of weight recently, so I worry about that too!
I was a very nervous student so I'm always happy to share what I've learnt along the way
There may be temporary parking on the move in day. My halls were no parking but on the day we moved in there was a car park for staff that they opened up to parents but you had to come at a certain time so there were staggered arrivals as there were 800 of us and about 50 parking spaces
You can always speak to the uni about it nearer the time.
As well as sending online shopping you can get student/parent gift cards from some supermarkets. I know Sainsburys and ASDA do them and I'm sure Tesco does (there isn't one near me). They have two halves and the parents have one half and their DD/DS has the other. The parent can take their half into their local supermarket and load the money on and the DD/DS can then use their half like a gift card to buy food in store. I have one for emergencies in case I run out of money because it's easier for my Mum to pop in and load £10 or £20 on a card after work then try and juggle her appointments to get to a bank to send me money. I only like the idea of a hamper because I think it's exciting getting something other than what you'd choose (I've been away from home for 6 years!).
Maybe you could just subtly mention it to her father to test the water before you go all out and ask him?
Char were you in an online shopping area in halls? I lived right next to a supermarket so I was sorted in my first year but my friends were in far away halls and they used to club together to do an online shop. If it's over £50 there's normally free delivery so 3 of them would do one big online shop and it got delivered for free!0 -
Hi
It's Saturday and I used all my brain up last week so I hope someone can tell me which years parental income counts for a student starting October 2011? I've been to the directgov website but lost the will to live part way through the site!!

Just going back to the student finance issue: I submitted my application for student finance the same day as my UCAS application (sometime in December 2009) I was rejected by my first choice uni, but it was hardly any trouble filling in a form changing the details to the uni that had given me an unconditional offer. I enrolled at uni on the Monday and the money was in my bank on the Thursday!
Good luck to your daughter and if there's anything you want to know from a mature halls-dweller, feel free to PM me.

aww thanks. I'm just obsessed with waiting to hear from Aberdeen and St Andrews, wish they'd hurry up, my daughter had to remind me today that it is actually her that's going to uni, not me!0

Just as an update it seems it is 16th March that applications open for new students. The date I said before (14th Feb) is just for existing students, its strange because last year it was the other way around - new students before existing students.0

To be honest, all you're going to hear is "conditional offer" and won't hear anything proper til she gets her A level results.
I believe the vast majority of people will get a conditional offer for the course they apply for, so there's no need to panic.

I'm not so sure... she was flat out 'unsuccessful' for Newcastle although her grades were predicted better than their minimum requirement. The ones she's waiting on require higher, so rejections are expected, unfortunately.0 -
Is she applying for Medicine or something?0

nope, sociology to 2 English unis and social anthropology to 3 Scottish unis.0
