If she's in private accomodation then yep you'll need a deposit and a months rent before she moves in.

Some private halls even ask for a deposit and a full terms rent.

My halls accomodation cost was not taken until student loans had come.

Private I required a £250 deposit but no rent in advance (but the landlord knows about student loans so doesn't ask til they've come)

It's crazy how much it varies depending on what you get.

If I'd had to pay my term's rent upfront I wouldn't have gone to uni because I wouldn't have the money and you have to register for your loan by going into the campus so you need to be nearby.
  • my daughter will definitely be in halls and if they require a big deposit... well it just won't be possible!

A deposit of £250 is normally payable when the offer of accommodation is accepted.
  • thanks for that. I only have a job for another 6 weeks, so I best get saving!
  • she just got a rejection from Newcastle :( We weren't expecting that, they want 3 Bs and she is predicted 1 A and 2 Bs. The only one she has a chance at now is Aberdeen, as she has no chance of Edinburgh or St Andrews (I know that, she still has hope).

She has an offer for City University London, but it doesn't seem to have the huge university campus life thing going on....

that's quite unusual though, is it not? Unless he's predicted 3A*s perhaps?

lol! 3 A*s in his dreams! Just average 2Cs anda B, but not sure why he heard back so quick. Most friends I know of their children have heard back also, but did put applications in early too.

    As for accomodation....

The booking line opened at Leeds Met yesterday for Sept 2011 starters, so we have reserved it already for our son - and paid a £200 deposit - which is refundable if he doesn't get predicted grades. He knew where he wanted to live in his first year, and therefore thought best to book it now rather than rushing around last minute and taking whats left.

let me get this right, they want lower grades than she is predicted and therefore turned her down????? how bizarre!
I do know that a lot of it rests on your personal statement, and what you have done to show you are keen to study that subject etc. Eg. if you want to be a teacher then ahve you spent time in a school etc etc. My son volunteered to spend time in a manufacturing organisation and worked in marketing/personnel etc and waffled about all of this on his statement. He also mentioned his leadership roles at school, and other achievements etc which all fit in with his course he wants to study.

Oh bless her, she must remember it's not anything personal. This year there is just a ridiculous amount of applicants per space compared to past years and creates a strain that means some people, with the right grades, still might not get the place.

There isn't a strong campus community at my uni as the halls are on the other sides of town in two lumps together and then everyone moves out into various suburbs after 1st year but it's ok. How does she feel about London? If she's really nervous I'd be concerned but if she's excited embrace it. It could be the making of her having such a large playground to explore and develop into an adult in!

PS. I realise that last sentence sounds lame like I think I'm Oprah. I'm sorry!
