  • Surely the question should be adhered to and answered rather than people debating finer political points when they have very little grasp / knowledge of the matter in question.

Never judge anyone until you've walked a mile in their shoes? Surely?

If it wasn't for people having kids then where would we be? Bearing in mind the decreasing birth rate and ageing population?

Don't worry about the selfish wind ups on here who are so holier than thou that they are also on a moneysavingexpert website.

I really wish people would stop banging on about tax credits, the state and the like. Parents and families have it tough now with the increasing energy costs, it only gets harder.

  • Rather than moan about the payments decreasing slightly, be thankful that you get over £500 for what is essential a lifestyle choice - being a SAHM is a luxury and having 4 children was always going to be an expense and one that should be considered taking into account the salaries in the household.

Why be rude? this lady was asking a question for advice, if you have none then don't reply. I understand that what you saying is you have been used to getting a set amount and for it to just change like that can make you worry about where to find the 'missing' cash.

With 4 children it will be hard I'd say maybe sit down and write down all you have coming in and going out and see where you could maybe make some cut backs. It's very hard and such a worry when you have little one's to support. Good luck with this.
The day I had my Beautiful son is the day everything came together for me. For someone so small he done so much and made me complete.
  • Thanks Robert Robertson ;) very true words
  • I agree that we shouldn't be judging the OP but we could instead be trying to help her find a way to manage with less money and advice on how to do so, but whilst we're talking about the system...

I have no problems with people claiming what the government say they are entitled to, but I hate the system because I don't get enough from it. I need to make 30 years NI contributions to get a state pension, otherwise HMRC write to me and tell me to pay more. Healthcare is supposed to be free yet I have to pay for eyecare and dentistry. I rarely visit a doctor. There was a time one year when I was unemployed at the end of November, went into hospital soon after so couldn't work, tried to claim Jobseekers but they made it so incredibly difficult for me. So I was entitled to claim it, but I didn't. Once I recovered I marched right out on the first day of the new year with my CV and made money to pay the bills. But I will still always resent the system for never giving me what I deserved, especially when I don't plan on having children.

Children are a lifestyle choice and people should pay for it themselves. John Smith at work might want to go skiiing for 3 weeks or take a random trip to Ireland, which is his lifestyle choice but he sure as hell isn't going to get time of work for it, so why should Susie Jones get time off for her kids? Pure favouritism.

I should not be resentful that I have to work hard to pay for all my bills and lifestyle choices myself - I should be proud and feel a sense of accomplishment. But when I see that everyone else around me is getting so much free stuff it just makes me so angry.

To advise the OP - I encourage you to do everything you can to get more money from the government by writing a letter to HMRC or whatever, but just don't expect them to grant it. You will have to make do on what they have given you, and there are ways of making this stretch and coping - which I'm sure many other learned MSE forumites will help you do.
