Amazon Kindle free upgrade to Lighted cover from non-lighted

There is a known issue at the moment with the Amazon non-lighted covers for the Kindle. People are experiencing issues with speed and the kindles freezing when they are in the non-lighted covers. There is no issue with the lighted covers.

Amazon have removed the non-lighted covers from their sites and if you have bought one, and you tell them you have issues, they are currently offering a full refund, and a gift certificate for the difference in price between the lighted and non-lighted. So basically you get to upgrade your cover to a lighted one and you keep the old one too, as they are not asking for them to be sent back.

I know it's not a grabbit, but I'm sure they'll have some new non-lighted covers out soon, so maybe they'll just start replacing them.

There is a contact link on the kindle support page.

Enjoy! :j

  • Very interesting to read this. I've had a few problems with my Kindle freezing ever since I got the cover for it. I wouldn't have thought that a cover could have such an effect - it's just a piece of leather, after all - but hey, what do I know?

Where did you find out about the replacement service? I'm keen to take advantage, as you might imagine...

I had problems myself, and Amazon sent me a replacement Kindle for it, but if you have a look at the 1 star reviews of the non-lighted covers (if you can find them!) you'll see that it's a general problem, something to do with the clips on the side that attach to the Kindles, but as the lighted ones are metal and conduct electricity through them, they don't have the same problem. You will probably find that you have no problems if you take the case off.

You'll also see from the reviews how many people are getting free upgrades to lighted covers.

If you just email Amazon and tell them you're having issues with your case, they should refund and make up the difference for a lighted cover :)

On the Kindle store page there's a link to Kindle support on the top right and a yellow button on that page to contact them. They have refunded me £29.99 and added a £21 gift certificate today.
  • Thanks - just called customer services and they did the same for me. Have to say I'm very impressed with the service - annoying that the problem arose in the first place, of course, but they resolved it well. And thanks a lot for the post OP!

I've just sent them a stroppy email as I paid full price for the lighted cover at launch. I want to buy another Kindle next week for my husbands birthday too, but might re-think that now.

I'm not sure I understand this. We have a Kindle, the first one available when Amazon started shipping them to the UK (we ordered from the US site). We got this one year ago. We bought a leather cover for it separately. Are we eligible for a lighted cover? Or is this something different, like you bought a kindle with a cover included?

Just wanted to say thanks very much for posting this, sent an email to Amazon about 2 hours ago through their support function and received a refund and a promotional discount on the lighted cover already! Perfect as I love my Kindle and was getting so frustrated with it re-starting. Plus this will be great for reading in bed as my partner gets v annoyed if I leave the light on :j

The non-lighted cover is faulty so they should replace it for everyone. The US site has also removed the non-lighted ones. You should be able to get an upgrade to a lighted one :)

You can read the 1 star reviews on the US site and see how many problems there are!
  • thanks OP i have a lighted one but my mum doesnt so will let her know about this

I can't find the record of ordering the cover anyhow, so maybe we got it somewhere besides amazon. Oh well, hubby says the order was made on Amazon but not actual Amazon case, so he doesn't think we'd qualify anyhow.
