My garlic went in late Oct/early Nov and has withstood all the extreme winter weather we had this year; looking at the 180ish I put in, I can see no major gaps in the rows, so am looking forward to being self sufficient ish in garlic, allowing myself 3 heads a week, and will blitz and freeze extras that might start going woody from next December/Jan 2012.

I had to buy 2 cloves this week.........It nearly choked me.

PS. Celeriac.........if only, this gets slugged every year, I'm still to try a home grown one after 4 years of trying.

I'd like to think you'd be self sufficient with 180! We are self sufficient with about 10% of that amount!

Sowed my tomato seeds yesterday - 1 tray of Italian & 1 tray of good old Moneymaker. They're in my back bedroom until they sprout & then they'll come downstairs into the utility where its cooler but still light.
Sally A - I'm beginning to agree with you over potatoes in containers as all the results I have had have only been fair. I'm trying a dirfferent approach this year - found a nice big 'muck' bucket & I'll try it with only 2/3 seed pots & see how that works out. Unfortunately I dont have room to sow in open ground - still perseverence is what gardening is all about :) (yeah!!)
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

Hi guys, so far I only have chillis and peppers on the go...having mixed results, but it's my first year at growing any fruit/veg. I planted a whole packet of pretty in purple and so far only have 2 that have come up-been in about 3 weeks now, but another 4 are showing signs of life. I also have early jalapenos which are doing better, about 7 at the last count and another 2 showing signs of life. The peppers are doing better, I think I have about 30 coming up (2 varieties but can't remember which-both from the real seed company).
I'm worried about all of them though, I planted them into propagators and put them by the aga, which seemed to do the trick for germination. Once they were up I removed the lid and moved them to a sunny spot, not too warm but light. However, they're all very leggy (except the pretty in purple, which are just tiny). Can anyone give me any advice on what to do to help them along, none are showing any true leaves yet (I don't think-just the two that were the cotyledon's).
    Any advice would be great!

I've planted several pot-grown rhubarb plants in my 20 years here, all in different locations, and not one has grown again the second year. No idea what I'm doing wrong, I'd love a huge rhubarb patch and my next door neighbour grows it without any problems. Maybe the hens damage it too much when it's dying down?

I have only two windowsills wide enough for seed trays, both west-facing and with radiators under them. The windows are 70s aluminium double glazing. Won't the temperature be too high when the radiators are on, and much too low when the glass cools at night? I could leave the heating on constantly, at maybe 16-18C? And I don't have a greenhouse, only a four-shelf Tardis growhouse whose clear plastic cover ripped to shreds in the gales last week :(

Lots of seeds to sow - beans, peas and mangetout, carrots and parsnips, beetroot, leeks, squashes and courgettes, cues, peppers, toms and salad, broccoli and cabbage, sweetcorn, spinach... but I just can't work out where to put all the seed trays/pots!

Is there anywhere in the house where you can put up the four-shelf tardis (without the shredded plastic cover)?

They won't necessarily come true or be really productive but you can give it a go, you have nothing to lose. If you have a Lidl or Aldi nearby they both have seeds. Lidl have packs starting at 29p for small seeds and larger seeds at 49p. Aldi have a smaller range at a similar price.

    Hope that helps

If you grow from packet with varieties not marked 'hybrid' or 'F1' (all female), the seeds from the fruit should be fertile to save for next year.

But if you do want to grow from fruit rather than bought seed, try my favourite Cape Gooseberry (aka physalis, aka Chinese lantern fruit). It tastes miles better than from bought seed and in a greenhouse or sunny window, the fruit will still be good for a little Christmas treat.
  • My plan to start sowing fell by the wayside but I have been up to the Allotment and put my Onions in and today I plan to get up there to put my Shallots in so that bed will have Garlic, white onions, red onions and shallots.

I'm off to the Garden centre tomorrow to get my Compost and then hope to start sowing some seeds at the weekend, bought some more Seed packets yesterday when I was out, can't resist and now have 60 packets. Think I have an addiction. Got 4 different varities of Tomatoes but use loads of these in Cooking so nothing goes to waste and I like having the choice.

    Good luck everyone.;)
