  • Hi all
New to this thread, this is our second year on our allotment (only did potatoes, tomatoes & peppers last as we started late in the season) Really looking forward to get more out of it this year..
All my seeds arrived a couple of weeks ago and I'm collecting my potatoes tomorrow to start chitting..
Is it too early to start my tom's indoors for outdoor planting later in the season??
I'm starting my onion seeds tomorrow too, but wasn't sure about the tom's...

Ooo getting all excited about the thought of how much we could grow this year lol!
    Nothing is impossible...

I dusted off my electric propagator :j (size of a normal seed tray) and planted 5 lots of different chillis. Now comes the incessant checking to see if anything is coming up :) As soon as they show signs of life I will be starting up peppers and tomatoes. I can't wait, as soon as New year is over I am always itching to get going but somehow I manage to just about wait until the right time before sowing. I'm going to do my first car boot this year (as long as the seeds co-operate) so I am planting extra of everything, does anyone have any recommendations for good car boots in SE London? Ooh, I've just remembered that I have a seed head of pattys plum poppy from last year, they can go out in the cold frame thereby not taking up valuable indoor windowsill space. Short lived but so beautiful it's worth having them. If they come up they will hopefully sell well at the car boot, I must go and check if there is any restriction on propagating it for sale. Time I was off to bed and dreams of all my lovely fruit and veg to come in the summer.

Just been googling the poppy and looks like my seeds may be no good, no matter I'll try them anyway and see what happens.

I just dusted off my left over seeds from last year and found all the ones I ordered in the Dobies end of year sale so am pretty much sorted for this year without buying any:j

I bought seed potatos yesterday to chit and some spring planting garlic since the snow came before we could get the autumn planting stuff in! (We had left it a bit late I suppose:o)

I'm not going to plant anything until the 3rd weekend in feb cos we are heading away for a few days up to then and it would all die on me! But I am all organised now for full steam ahead once I'm back
  • I don't see many peas as the on a practical note I have NEVER been able to cook a fresh pea, they all come out like bullets whether done too little too much steamed or boiled so i think maybe fate is telling me to enjoy the view instead!

Smithyjules if you use salt when cooking have you tried a wee bit of sugar instead? Salt can make them tough.

arbroath - I don't tend to use salt very much and I haven't tried sugar so will have a go with that, thanks for the suggestion. Mind you I'm happy enough with frozen and watching my pea-nibblers enjoying themselves on the nursery run:j!

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice. I have some jalapeno seeds. Will it be warm enough for them in the greenhouse now or should I start them on the window sill? I'm in North Lincolnshire. Also, the same question for tomatoes, or can I leave them a bit longer yet?

    Thanks

Hi LIsa, I'm in Cambridge and I've just sown tomatoes and jalapenos but both indoors n a windowsill. I think the instructions said they need household-type temperatures. A greenhouse would probably be too cold right now, especially as the temperature is supposed to drop a bit tonight...

I'd keep them indoors until mid/end of May if possible. Good luck, but I always found Jalapenos a bit disappointing in the heat department.

    Hi there

I was given a baby rhubarb plant last year which has spent the winter in a pot. It has now started sprouting. When would it be best to put this in the ground? Also someone told me that I should be covering it to make sure it tastes nice and goes pink, is this right?

As you can tell I am a complete novice but have just inherited a large garden which I plan to turn into an allotment this year so will be back to ask for more advice soon I expect!:o

    Thanks
