My spinach and salad that I put in on Saturday is out! So, it only took 4 days...
Reminder to myself:
I'll be patient not to plant anything else this weekend. I'll be patient not to plant anything else this weekend...
Oh, apart from the trees that have arrived yesterday (idealworld mini orchard selection) - I wil try and get some of those black buckets from Morrisons/Asda and put them in there temporarily, before my tree stumps from the garden are removed.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
I grew Marketmore last year as well but planted them too late so only got a couple of small cuces...nice tho! Will plant them mid march this year! My tomatoes i planted a few weeks ago have all died..too cold inside i think..no central heating! so will replant some on 14th Feb. Broad beans are doing well, have potted them into larger pots and am putting outside in the day now ready to be planted out :-)
When should i plant peas, runner beans and sweetcorn? I have a little plastic propagator inside (not heated) and a blowaway greenhouse. Thanks Sally-your tips are fantastic!0 -
Sweetcorn, I tend to start off in the greenhouse, 1 seed per 3.5 inch pot on 31/3 or 1/4 it really depends when the weekends fall, so I'd say first weekend of April.
I don't do peas
, I find frozen are much better value and avoids pea moth, but I do grow mangetout around 7th - 13th March - in previous years I did a seed per coffee cup pot, but last year just sprinkled them into a seed tray and planted them out like a carpet tile - I did rip them apart a bit to fit the pea sticks and they did great.
Frenchies I sow about mid March in pots in the greenhouse and when I plant out I protect with old window panels to lean against the outer sides of the wigwam - they do well, but please remember to plant the plants inside the wigwam, so you can protect from late frosts by using old window panes, bubble wrap, or even newspaper.
Runner beans are sown in pots in the greenhouse towards the end of April, and planted out towards the last week of May when the frost risk is minimal.0 -
Thanks for this. Might plant my sweet peppars. I'm awaiting delivery of my greenhouse so it's window sills for now.Payment a day challenge: £236.69

My aubergines that I have sown on Jan 22nd are still not out! I've tried 'looking' for them today, but couldn't find them. On the other hand, the ones I've sown a week later, I could find some, and they were sprouting.
So, I need advice... Should I give them another week (it is 2 weeks already) or just sow some more? They are in unheated propagator, which gets moved a bit above the radiator during the day get some warmth.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
I love growing peas, it's great for the kids to see something growing AND be able to eat the produce fresh (very few make it into the house for cooking).Payment a day challenge: £236.69

*offers huge thanks to Sally*
I agree WOMOT..... nothing beats the flavour of peas straight off the plant, and don't forget pea shoots are really yummy in salads!!
Just finished sowing some seeds inside today and the list to date includes....
-carrots in buckets - early nantes, old seed so thought I might as well give it a bash, they can go in the greenhouse when they come up
- Purple sprouting broccoli
- sweet peppers
- numex chillis
- jalapeno chillis
- 3 x toms for greenhouse
- some calendula
- lots of leeks......
- some lambs lettuce
and thats not including the flowers....
and the list for March is even longer!!! Hopefully the weather will warm up a bit for me to get a lot of these into the greenhouse.
Oh, and the pots have been arranged for chitting!
I am really looking forward to growing this year.....sealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -

I don't see many peas as the Husband and DD (now 4) scrap over who gets them on the way out to nursery in the mornings...they scoff the pods too!Don't tell the husband but i get that warm fuzzy feeling when i watch them walk through the garden to the car pushing each other out of the way laughing so they can get to the peas first!
on a practical note I have NEVER been able to cook a fresh pea, they all come out like bullets whether done too little too much steamed or boiled so i think maybe fate is telling me to enjoy the view instead!0
