Veg to plant in February and things to do.

OK peeps, as it's less than a week away, this is what I'll be putting in:-

Early Feb - sweet peppers for growing on in an unheated greenhouse.
Early Feb - Aubergines, either grow lots (6+ish) or none, a recipe will either require 2 bigs/4 smalls and aubergines have not got the hang of growing to order, and they are pants for storing - you need them all ready at the same time - aubs left on the plant go bitter.

14/2 - tomatoes for an unheated greenhouse (this gives you 6 extra weeks if the first lot go wrong)

Keep sowing your chilli seeds, along with herb seeds on a windowsill for kitchen use.

End of Feb-ish - all shallots on order should be here by now (still waiting).

Mid Feb was traditional for parsnip seed sowing, dig say 4" deep trench, and sprinkle approx 3 seeds to a station about 9" to a foot apart, let the most vigorous one grow and pull up the rest. These can also be sown up until early April. Personally, I don't sow these until mid March.

I'm sure there is a load more - just need to find my diary, and I will edit.

3rd week of Feb, I'll get my leeks going, either in a deep peach punnet type container (20ish) or a cat litter tray (90ish)

Will add and edit (So keep an eye on Post No1 ;)) as I find my notes from previous years - and again please note I am in Somerset, so anyone oop north may be a few weeks behind me.

Hi, thanks for this, we did very well with leeks and parsnips last year, so we shall do those again.

Its to early for me to sow toms yet, I can't do that until late March/early April, but can't wait to get started all the same :j

Hi Sally....Many thanks for the tips on when to sow. I'm a bit of a beginner but have a wonderful chilli plant from last year that is still going strong!

Unfortunately, I can't plant anything in the ground and can only use grow bags and pots. I have sown my cucumbers but they are looking not so happy on the windowsill (about 1.5inches tall). Any tips on cucumbers in terms of how to manage them especially as they'll probably have to go outside before the frosts are over?

I'd probably hold back for sowing cuces until mid March, I sow Marketmore, a prickly little ridge cucumber but very tasty, good for outdoors or an unheated greenhouse.

I got a bit impatient last year and sowed a couple in Feb, they didn't do very well and the mid March sowings came on and overtook them with much better results.

Marketmore's are really great old variety, but if you are growing in tubs, use an old builders bucket sized pot, put a 3 stick wigwam into the bucket around 4 - 5 ft high and loop string around for the tendrils to grab onto.

Thanks! I have put peppers and aubergine this weekend. These are to go outside, as I don't have greenhouse, but there is spare room if needed! I also put some more thai and 'normal' basil and salad, and few seeds of spinach - to be used in the salads, if work out. I had some aubergine seeds in for about 2 weeks now and they still haven't come out (rosa bianca). I hope they will do so soon!

They won't necessarily come true or be really productive but you can give it a go, you have nothing to lose. If you have a Lidl or Aldi nearby they both have seeds. Lidl have packs starting at 29p for small seeds and larger seeds at 49p. Aldi have a smaller range at a similar price.

    Hope that helps
