Oh smithyjules - what a lovely picture that conjures up & what a lovely memory too. We tend to forget some of the less obvious pleasures of the fruits of our gardens/windowsills whatever!
Has anyone grown their pots in buckets? I've tried for a couple of years but I dont seem to get pounds of a plant :( I've put some reds & whites out for chitting & they're getting on well. & I was going to put one in a 2 gallon bucket & top up to the brim with potting compost. I tried earthing up last year in the bucket but didn't feel it was very successful - I'd be very grateful for any tips

I bought the potato planters this year, and they are much bigger than 2 gallons (I assume about 9 litres). I haven't used them yet, but the package says they hold about 40 litres of compost, so about 9 gallons!!!

Maybe that's why I'm not getting a good crop! I did try them in black sacks one year that were much bigger than the buckets but they didn't seem to be any better :( I think I'll have to 'speriment' though using a bigger container does make sense

I grow in the ground and some of those potato bags but I don't put as many seed potatoes in the bags as they say i should (I'm thinking space). I put two in each one and that's it. Get an ok crop, but best results from the ground.

  • Can you grow carrots in a bucket then? Sorry for my ignorance, have inherited some seeds and have a soil free garden so am looking to be creative!

Yes you can grow carrots in a builders bucket sized pot, they won't be very plentiful, but you will be able to ensure it's fine soil. Go for the short rooted variety, just had a look in the T&M catalogue, they recommend Parmex - a round carrot or Mokum which is a stubby variety.

The larger ones such as Autumn King are the winter stew sized carrots that would probably be a bit too big.

Hello All ***** waves at everyone ********

I have been itching to get out there so far this year. Had a 1/2 decent year last year but moved house in the middle of spring so had no end of trouble moving seedlings and had limited on space in old house so missed a lot of stuff :( This year however I am going for it :D

My seed pots have arrived I'm doing 'Charlotte' & 'Pink Fir' Doing these in potato bags. I have 8 bags :rotfl: had decent crops last year so fingers crossed this year.

Have sown sweet peppers, Spring garlic (in modules as still a little cold), basil, and lettuce - All in greenhouse

I have 2 x raised beds so am selective what goes in there - everything else is in pots or greenhouse.

Going to have a :coffee: and plan my sowing calendar :)
Goal - We want to be mortgages free :j
