I've always used bio on mine, and liquid not powder, as powder tends to block my drains (washing machine is in the basement below main drain level so we need to be extra careful).

The advice to use non bio is outdated. Recent research has shown that people, and babies, are no more likely to have a skin reaction to bio as non bio. In fact it's usually the perfume agent which people react to. Bio is much better at breaking down "organic" stains! If your baby hasn't ever reacted to bio I'd give it a shot. Powder is usually recommended for nappies because you can use only a tiny bit but I've not had a problem with liquid in over a year of washing nappies in it. I wouldn't use liquitabs or tablets though as you can't control the quantity used with these.

mummy2mygirls, Teenyfits are supposed to be excellent. Tots have always said that their Easyfits aren't the best for preventing leaks. They had a statement on their site about it.

Im still not able to use the teenyfits as baby has not turned up yet!! Lazy baby being late lol. Ive order a couple more tiny nappies aswell which i cant wait to use :)

I also have never found a problem with clothes going over the nappies. DS just turned one (yesterday :) ) and he still wears 9-12 mths jeans and combats - most from next or tesco so dont know if they come up bigger or not?? Sometimes dds leggins look a bit tight round the bum but they still fit ok.
We have some baby legs and they are lovely!! Look so cute. Even if I didnt use cloth they would be good for if you use a sling and there little legs get a big cooler, also great for when crawling as DSs knees keep getting really red in the garden so they help protect them. But they are best for showing of your fluffy bums lol :D

I just bought 10 TotsBots Easyfit and 5 TB stretchies, mainly because the bumgenius lady I spoke to didn't listen to a word I said and because TB are made locally.
I just posted on the MS Old Style thread regarding using soapnuts to clean nappies
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/174684
Would welcome any opinions on that, as I love them for all my other washing.

And thanks for the Ecover tip, I find the laundry liquid smells quite bad, but it's the only alternative I've so far found 'til i find myself a new soapnut supplier...

I thought that the non-bio advice was more about the nappies than the effects on skin - maybe that the enzymes that break down organic matter also affect the material of the nappies?

Nicki - did you wash Bumgenius nappies in normal bio liquid?

Over here in Holland I bought the nappies through a cloth nappy company that does the other brands as well and I talked to the local representative who uses bumgenius herself and she said that the main thing was to use powder rather than liquid (but didn't say why)

I just wanted to ask too (as a first-time mum and not having experience with any other kinds of nappy). How much leaking is normal? LO is almost 10 weeks old and gets changed every 3 hours or so (more if I hear anything suspicious!). I would say that we have a couple of leaks a day (damp trousers/romper).

I don't use bum genius. I have bambinex teddies. I bought mine from the nappy lady and the advice on her website is that bio is fine. She also sells bum genius nappies so I assume it is fine for both.

I change DS2 who is 19 months every 3 hours, or more often if he has pooed, and have only ever had one or two leaks. I also have him in a nightime cloth nappy which goes on at 7pm and comes off at 7.30 am usually, and that has never ever leaked, though it has an extra booster.

Leaking is often because a small amount of the nappy has poked out from the wrap, so the moisture wicks out onto the clothes, or because the vest or trousers are a bit too snug over the nappy, so the nappy gets a bit squeezed and even though it is all still contained in the wrap, some moisture gets squeezed up onto the vest and then wicks over the rest of the clothes. If neither of these scenarios is yours, you might just have a champion pee-er and need an extra booster in your nappy!

After starting this thread to get advice to save us money on nappies DS decided to make an early appearance & was born at 26+5 weeks. He's now 8.5 weeks old & now weighs just under 4 pounds. When he comes home he will still be very small so it's going to be a while before we can use our terry nappies. Instead we are getting through loads of disposable prem nappies that cost far too much! Best laid plans... ;)

Congratulations BBM. That must have been a shock to have him so early. Hope he is doing well.
