Now i am not a Gina Ford fan, but my friend gave me a her potty training book with some hand me downs. It did work for us; along with a cut out picture of a Thomas the Tank engine bike at the end of the star chart.

Basically, you have her sit on the potty hourly until she is used to using it, then after 3 days start allowing her to take the lead about when she needs to go.

DS got one dolly mixture for a self lead wee and 2 for a self lead poo for 2 weeks, then he had his bike and no more sweeties. I am sure it hasn't damaged him in the long term.

For my little boy we made a ''potty treat box.'' We found a box and he helped decorate it and filled it with his favourite candy. It was placed nearby the potty and was reserved for him only. Every time he used it he got to pick out a piece of candy and for a few days he reminded us every time he was to have a piece of candy until by the end of the week he got so used to it, he didn't even mention the ''potty treat box.'' Sometimes bribery can work! :D Good luck to you!

Right have made a little 'wee wees' chart for her. WIth clouds for the days and a picture of a potty and toilet :rotfl: going to pick up some little stickers when we go to tesco in a bit and then will give it a good go over the weekend.
Is it better to just keep the nappy off all day or give her nappy on/nappy off time?
You wouldn't think I was a nursery nurse before I left to have my 2nd baby but it's always so much harder when it's your own kids! :rotfl:

I would agree with the Gina ford point of view that when it's time to potty train, you swap nappys for big girl/boy pants and only use them for nap/night time from then on, or it can be confusing for the child.

Also, nappies are so absorbant that sometimes they dont realise they are 'going' whereby with pants i would occassionally get a tiny bit of wee on the pants before he knew he was going, stopped, and went to the potty instead.

  • I dont care what anyone says, picking, buying and wearing big girls knickers and bribery with a little sweet each time worked wonders for us,
DD was out of daytime nappies in no time and also dry at night not long after and she stopped expecting rewards once she had the hang of it
  • My 2 and a half year old DS has been offered 2 mornings a week at playgroup, but have specified that he has to be dry. Well we are potty training at the moment but I'm not sure if he will be done in time?
A friend has said that they have to take him even if he is not dry as they are not allowed to specify either way?
    Anyone know the correct ruling???
    Thanks

  • I don't know about "laws/rules" being set in stone so to speak but my understanding is that if your child needs changing then 2 members of staff have to attend to the matter and therefore are not able to look after the other children for the time they are away . Therefore their staff to child ratio is down and there is the health and safety implications .

I know this sort of contradicts as when trained children need the toilet they would have to leave as well but I think that most nurseries tend to do a "mass" toilet trip several times a session .

Hope I made some kind of sense !

  • Hello macymoo,

This happened with afriend of mine, her little girl started pre-school sessions at 2.5years old but she had to be out of nappies. They would change her pants if she had an accident but she was expected to ask and use the toilet.

I know funding for preschool starts for the term after their 3rd birthday and preschools can't refuse a child if they are still in nappies but I think they can before the child is 3.

  • Just to add to this that I know how you feel as my just turned 2 yr old is no where near potty training yet but needs nursery so I am having to pay £28 a session at a "proper" (I use the term loosely) nursery , you know the ones that you can leave your kid from birth at when you go back to work .

I used to work in a playgroup and if there were children who weren't quite potty trained we would allow them to come as long as they had pull ups on.

You should ask them what they're policy is.
