I just can't understand why, with it being so widely known how such places source meat etc, would put that stuff in their own or their children's mouths.

    Cos it's yummy.

I have take out delivered, on occasion, from one Chinese restaurant and only the vegetarian options. My mother is a chef of many years in an award winning restaurant and I guess I hold the same high standards that she expects from eating out. In my locale there are only 3 establishments that I'll eat in (one being a Chinese restaurant and one being Greek/British) and the third of them is where my Mum works (A mostly Italian menu)

I'm not saying I'm better than someone who eats in KFC, I just can't understand why, with it being so widely known how such places source meat etc, would put that stuff in their own or their children's mouths. When I think back to a time when I WOULD buy food in say KFC or McDonalds, it makes me feel a bit ill to think of what I was ingesting.

I apologise if my views cause any offence, but I shall not be changing them.

    Two things spring to mind.

    Is the Chinese MSG free?

Would you say using MSG is a good food practice?

And knowing Chinese restaurants, I'd be gobsmacked if their vegetarian food is actually vegetarian.................I

As was the delicious meal I cooked for dinner tonight for less than the cost of a so called....what do they called them...a bargain bucket or something? ...Ha...bucket.

Said delicious meal was also nutritional, cruelty free and you wouldn't be left feeling hungry again half an hour later. :p

There is nothing wrong with MSG when eaten at the normal level contained in Chinese food.

There was a hysterical reaction in the US to a report that suggested that MSG might be associated with certain symptoms but no credible scientific research found a significant link when consumed in a normal manner.

As is so often the way with these things the media blew up the original concerns out of all proportion but barely mentioned the results of the properly performed research that gave the 'all clear'.

So, even now, decades later, we have people repeating all sorts of nonsense about MSG.

One does have to allow for the sodium content in a similar way to NaCl (salt), of course.

My point was that people criticise McDonalds standards (for example, they refuse to use MSG) where as they will eat at places that are dirty, don't serve free range or organic, use the cheapest pieces of meat, don't care whether the suppliers are British, treat staff and customers with contempt and cover food in MSG............

Why if the food is tasty would you cover it in MSG?

Things are 'tasty' because of the flavourings used.

MSG is just another flavouring along with salt, pepper, herb, spices, and the underlying taste of the actual, nutritional, ingredients.

Using emotive language such as 'covering it in ...' attempts to make a false distinction between one flavouring and others.

The only reason to avoid MSG is if you don't like the flavour of MSG - in just the same way as you would avoid food cooked with aniseed flavourings if you don't like the flavour of aniseed.

    the point remains the same.

McDonalds don't use Monosodium glutamate and their food is tasty and Chinese take-aways have to use it to make their food tasty.

I don't want to cook every night, especially after getting in late and being tired.

People are going to eat whatever they like,if one person dislikes fast food outlets there are fifty others who like them its all about freedom of choice.

Myself im not averse to having fast food, however this is seen as a treat rather than the norm,i agree that you can sometimes cook a more balanced meal cheaper.....however a little of what is bad for you from time to time can be good.

People should not be berated just because they occasionally like fast food, and i refuse to beleive that people who state they never eat fast food be it from a fast food outlet or a ready meal maybe stretching the truth a little, maybe!

I had a lovely spaggetti bolognaise last night, and yes the sauce came out of a jar,i dont feel bad for that it was quick,it was easy, and good grief it was tasty.I could have had a take out from a restaurant and it would have cost five times the price, and by the time it arrived, our home made one would have been prepared, eaten and we would have washed up aswell.

My main issue with people who eat stuff like KFC, is my views on animal rights. I certainly do look down my nose at people who don't give a hoot about the conditions the animals their "meat" came from was left in...so long as it's "tasty" or "cheap".

If you're going to eat slaughter products, at least have the morals to eat meat sourced from an animal that got to live with some humanity and dignity first.

It's like the Happy Egg people's eggs, turns out their chickens weren't living in very happy conditions. So now if I need eggs, I buy from a local farm.

The fact we eat so much meat (not personally) is bad enough, the fact we don't care about how the animals treated before we eat it and what chemicals and hormones it's been pumped with that we don't know the long term health dangers of....well that's just pitiful.

Going vegetarian was the best decision I ever made.
