Cesarina annoys me immensley, but last night I really quite felt for the lady in the couple, she seemed absolutely shell shocked, and when she suggested moving home closer to her folks it seemed quite desperate.

But yes. They knocked 8k off the total - which is briliant - but not one single word about how to accomplish the rest of their debt free lifestyle. Haemoraging that much on interest won't stop just because they're living on £8 a day. Think the programme could have been much MUCH better. Suppose no TV channel wants to upset the credit card company advertisers, who bring in so much funding revenue.

I'd be interested to see the finer details when she says "if you continue living this way, you'll be debt free by ...." as I often don't see how this is possible (e.g. the guy tonight will be debt free in under 2 years, yet still has £30,000+ to clear - no explanation of what "this way" involves - he certainly doesn't have half a dozen Lexus cars to sell, yet only managed a couple of thousand in addition to the car in the first month... Surely, keeping to this budget, and allowing for the fact that he got rid of all the "one off" things in the first month, how can he possibly hope to clear £30,000 in 20 months?!:o).

Glad to see I was not the only one who couldn't work the maths. The guy earns £32,000 per year, got his debt down to £30,000, but he is not going to have £15,000 a year to clear his debt, even leaving out the interest costs.

Also, why was his partner so shocked by his debt - I assume she has had her fair share of contributing to the purchasing of designer baby clothes. She clearly wasn't stupid, she must know how much the basic costs of their life are, eg mortgage. Where did she think the rest was coming from?

Found it just annoying. People need to wake up and get real and not buy things they can't afford.

lol - I like Martin's attempt at being politic.

The young lady is out of her depth here - trying to look very intense and just appears to me as though she is reading a script.

I watched one of these and try to avoid it.
Channel surfing I caught a brief glimpse and thought the couple weren't really committed - looked as though they thought it was fun being on TV but this woman doesn't understand about life (or personal finance). I wonder if they appeared much in the program - think they would have struggled to get many good clips.

Hope he didn't sell the vinyl collection.

Exactly what I was going to say! I think this programme is actually encouraging people to get into debt in a strange way by making too little of the problem - its as if they are saying OK you can live the high life, but cut right back for a couple of years and then you'll be fine. How many people on this board who are in £30K's worth of debt are going to be able to pay it back in 2 years, no matter how hard they try??

When Watchdog finishes its run then Beeb should sign up "The Martin and Alvin Show", it will have on it various MSE'rs me being the first so I can oggle at Martin :smileyhea:

We would all give advise on how people can reduce their debt, kind of like "this is my story" ha ha ha

Then Alvin and Martin can pepper it with cc / loan advise etc etc etc

What do we all think ???????
Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

"On Martins programme the people were more "normal" (terrible generalisation, I know!) with "average" salaries, whereas these people on this programme really are people with better than average salaries and assuming lifestyles to match."

I don't think they have the lifestyles to match otherwise they wouldn't be in £40k of debt !!

This woman is a nightmare, she could do with learning something about debt from us lot.

Secondly and on a serious note, I believe that it is trivialising debt and its consequences. 'oh just sell your car and it's all sorted' is not the answer.

All of us on these boards have felt real pain and suffering because of debt. Families have been ripped apart, careers spoiled and marriages ended and this programme is being made for entertainment purposes. I assume the people who commissioned this programme don't owe a penny.

Rant over - Richardvc leaves the room slamming the door on his way out !!
