I have no figures, but from what I remember mining, shipbuilding and car making were pretty high on the list.
demise.
And we are suppose to believe that the Tories are no longer "The Nasty Party." :wall:The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Also the printing industry, which was in dire need of modernisation but couldnt because of the unions.
Rupert Murdoch then sacked them all for striking (made possible by new Thatcher legislation).
I do remember when papers were not printed or whole sections were left blank because the union did not agree with the editorial. I also used to deal a little with "the print" in the eighties and some of the practises were unbelievable.0 -

Jeremy Kyle is nothing to the scum that is out there.
All I want it accountability. Ie with the right to be helped comes responsibility.
If we offer to help and have the 'p122' taken out of us, the help will not continue.
Jeremy Kyle is a form of benefits to those that appear, with i believe upto £200 expenses fees for the guests and a night in the hotel.0 -
What are you on about with Thatcher now? You mean the PM that destroyed violent unions who intimidated hard working honest people into striking?
You mean the same working honest people who have have had their jobs taken and handed over to the emerging world because they are cheaper.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher0 -

Some jobs suffered due to the unions fighting any sort of change. A prime example which I had some limited experience of, where the print unions in the 70s and 80s.0 -

More jobs were lost by not fighting, it is fairly obvious that business will take the line of least resistance i.e a choice
between jobs going in France or UK - well you know the answer. The opposite is of course relevant, new jobs are
likely to be created in the UK as opposed to France but more likely still trumped by Poland.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. Actually, it was Employment Support Allowance - the benefit replacing Incapacity Benefit. & what actually happened is that 39% elected not to pursue the claim.
Intriguingly, exactly the same %age were deemed fit for work.
What exactly is your point with this? It's about attempted new claims, not successful claimants. Ie, this isn't an example of people suceeding at milking the system, it's an example of the system filtering out such people. Reading past the Tory spin, one could actually infer from this that the system is fairly rigorous and the successful claimants likely to be genuine.0 -

so you'd prefer us to abolish the minimum wage and treat the working class like slaves in order to compete?
I don't get what you think our unions did to stop that happening, if anything they made it even less attractive to manufacture in the UK.Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.0
