Nope...You must have remembered a different Thatcher. I was talking about the one who made four million people unemployed on purpose because apparently it was an acceptable consequence to reduce the inflation her policies caused. Then had the audacity to blame the jobless for not working.

Its not her job to keep people employed in industries that are losing more than they make, and are completely unsustainable. The economy was in a terrible state before Thatcher, she took tough decisions, I dont think she enjoyed making people unemployed.

Who said the Lib dems are more left than labour?

Many LD voters thought so, then cannot believe thier eyes at what is happening.

Thats what I mean, when someone is actually in power, they stop being idealist and start being realist. Opposition is always very idealist, because they can be with no consequence, and its more popular with the public.

Most of them had "striked" themselves out of a job or were working in industries that had no future anyway. eg mining.
Four million on strike? I think that would have been noticed.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

The bottom line was that its cheaper for them to be on the dole, than working in failing industries and striking all the time.

They would also be able to get a new job once the economy recovered, which it did and has happened.

    So long term, it worked.

I would suggest that many of them were in industries with a high level of strikes.

I have no figures, but from what I remember mining, shipbuilding and car making were pretty high on the list.

Also the printing industry, which was in dire need of modernisation but couldnt because of the unions.

Rupert Murdoch then sacked them all for striking (made possible by new Thatcher legislation).
