Are you saying, sock-uk, that you bought, unwrapped and used two seperate SatNav purchases fully intending to take one of the now second hand units back? How cheeky are you! And the rest of you doing that. Imagine being the owner of a store and someone does that to you, how would you feel about that? Would you see it as a theft of your profits and time? Unbelievable.

Not that I have to defend myself but...

    A. I actually bought the last one on the shelf from ASDA that had been returned by a customer who had changed their mind.

    B. I work at ASDA and was recommended to try it and if I 'change my mind' I could take it back just like any other customer would have been told.

  • Hello to all ....I'm new to the board but just could not resist putting my oar in on this thread

I bought two of these as Christmas presents for my wife and daughter but because I am weak and can never keep a secret they were out of the box and stuck in their cars before you could blink.

Having read the thread I think that most of the problems are with people who are new to these things, you have to set it up first, yes you can use it straight out of the box but if its anything like the Mitac Mio which I have, unless you tell it not to it will always want to take you down the motorway because it thinks that will be the 'fastest' route.

You have to go into the setup menu and select the shortest / direct route and and set your preference regarding motorways / ferries / or toll roads otherwise it will always look to take you down one of these as its factory presets are for fastest route.

Both these units are amazing they lock on so much faster than my Mitac Mio (which is a pda with tom tom ) and are just as accurate.

The mapping is slightly out of date, but it is newer than my tom tom maps.

Value for money is amazing ! one unit locked up whilst visiting multiple sites in Birmingham but I think this was as much operator error as a machine fault. A quick 'soft' reset by gently pushing a pen or stylus in the right hand recess on the bottom of the machine cured it immediatly and it has not done it again since.

All of the problems mentioned in this thread happen with ALL other sat nav units and I really think its to do with the settings. If you dont exit the programme correctly on my pda then although the screen is blank the gps is still activley searching and the battery only lasts an hour.

My advice is to always exit the programme back to the start screen before switching it off this will ensure maximum battery life and minimise screen lock on startup.

If theres any left in Asda they are a steal at that money.
  • Well done 'bigwedgie'. You may be new to the board but not to common sense. I think Evesham are partly to blame for people getting fed up and taking them back as they should write a thorough manual. Many people seem very confused and it is, after all, a complicated piece of technology. I only found out yesterday how to simulate a navigation between any two places in the UK (it does not have to be from where you are!).

Does anyone know what format the audio files are in? I can play them in Windows Media Player but they don't seem to have a file extention.

I've just lived with a TomTom Go 300 for a couple of months (on loan) and the accuracy of that compared to the Evesham is startling. The Evesham ballsed up three out of the four journeys it was asked to calculate; the TomTom ballsed up none out of maybe fifty journeys.

I really like the design of the 6200 but it cannot be trusted in my experience. The bottom line is that these devices have to be damn-near 100% reliable or you end up getting more stressed out of driving than less so and second-guessing every direction they utter. With that in mind I wouldn't pay £10 for the Evesham as it stands now. And all ye naysayers just haven't yet been stung by the misdirections it's going to give you. And it will...

Please could you tell me what journeys they were as I would like to simulate them.
    Many Thanks.

That's a good point Mr. C. If I can remember the precise addresses I'll PM you.

    Mike.
  • The routes on Sat Nav's are calculated through a complex algorithm - however - they plot the most direct route using 'fast' roads or the shortest route - up to the user. I have used these for YEARS and - to be honest -I even designed a simple one over 15 years ago as part of a degree project - The software relies on upto date maps and GPS signal (which CAN be over 30 meters off actual position due to fluctuations in signal etc. a hell of a way if you are on a motorway with another road running parallel with it!) - hence sometimes the Sat Nav uses the wrong road!)- and simply plots a direct, simple route using the quickest (speed) roads and the shortest distantce - you have a certain flexibility stating your prefs.
HOWEVER - all the ones I have used, have NEVER plotted the quickest route from my house to where I work (7 miles - direct roads - no traffic lights). They all try to plot the shortest route or what they think are the fastest roads. They have no knowledge of traffic lights or possible conjestion at roundabouts. There is NO substitute for local knowledge!
To go to new places, I use a Sat Nav to plot my route (Phone with Bluetooth GPS unit) - I think TomTom is the best software (nothing to do with them - they are simply easy to use and work and have frequent updates) but always - I mean ALWAYS - double check before I set off with a 'proper' road map to make sure it looks ok. You're brave or foolish to rely on just the Sat Nav!

YOU CAN charge via usb as I have done so on more than once

You are correct, the 6200 CAN be recharged via the USB connection, in my case not on the PC but will via the Laptop....
So a partial apology to you

We bought one of these last night, and stuck it into our laptop to charge. After 4 hours the light was still orange.

So we left it a few more hours in the USB port and it's STILL orange - is it charging? Is it ok to use it before it goes green?!

    Thanks
    Helen
