Thanks to all the contributions here I now have 3 months half price on my Sky family package!
What I had really been looking for was how to access the Sky version of Freeview with the Sky equipment that I already have as it occurred to me that it is probably not much different from the basic package in content.
I also found out the answer to that - you cancel your subscription and because you have the satellite, box and card you can access all the free to view channels without having to buy a new card.
Thanks again to all those who have provided all this valuable information.

I ended up paying this...annoying isn't it  . Can you not cancel and apply in someone else's (husband/wife/partners) name at the new address. I would have done this if I had known. Also this way you will get a brand new dish and digibox, mine died shortly after moving...even more annoying

Did you tell them you moved?
If not get wife to sign up in her name with a different bank account ;)
    Worked for me!
  • hi - after getting the half price offer for 6 months (it finished in feb 05) I decided now was a good time for another try - I'm currently on the basic package (soon to be £21 I think) but have been keen for the sport for some time (footy starting soon) so I rang today (through the disney channel freephone) and told them that I was cancelling to move to NTL (who are offering free sport for 12 months) - I was put through to a second chap who after trying to persuade me that the ntl offer was inferior (no interactive content apparently) he then offered me 20% off of family+sport or full package for 12 months (reducing the new post august price for the full package to £33.50) - after assuring me that I could reduce this back down to the basic package anytime I decided to go ahead with the full package - now I can cancel my 'lovefilm' sub (£12 pm) which covers the increased sky price quite nicely - I'm aware that this offer is not quite as good as half price for 3 months but for anyone thinking of 'trading up' this is a cheaper route. Hope this helps someone - I love this thread!

I am on the Sky Family Pack (£21 per month from Sept 1st) and decided to give Sky a call today to cancel my subscription as I was not happy with the increased subscription prices. As usual I was put through to the retention department who asked me my reasons for quitting and I said increased subscription prices and also the fact that I could get channels for free on Freeview that I pay for on Sky. The advisor said that this was not the case so I politely replied that he was wrong and I can get E4, E4+1, The Hits, TMF, FTN, Sky Travel, UKTV History, UKTV Bright Ideas and Sky Sports News for free on Freeview but I pay for them on Sky.

I was told to wait a moment while he spoke to his manager and he came back with the following 2 offers:

Sky Family Pack half price at £10.50 per month for 3 months or 20% of Sky Family Pack for the next 12 months at £16.80 per month. The annual saving with the first option is £31.50 and with option 2 is £50.40 so I chose the 2nd option.

This is the 4th special offer I have had from Sky in the past 12 months so I suggest that if you don't want to pay the increased subscription prices give Sky a call and see what special deals they can offer you!
  • I cancelled my subscription about three months ago and was happy with the freeview channels I was getting. In May when I found out e4 was going to be freeview too I was delighted. However, you can't get e4 on freeview with a Sky box. I was gutted as Big Brother had started. I ended up phoning to re-instate my subscription the night Kinga turned up the first time, was scared I missed anything. Anyway, now BB is finishing I'm going to cancel again and if I don't get a half price offer it won't be the end of the world as the freeview channels you do get are great.

just got my Sport World+Family for 20%off for 12mths, having come out of 3mths @ 1/2 price wasn't expecting anything, but the NTL free sports helped, can cancel anytime, and so will downgrade again in May, as the World Cup is on BBC/ITV, and go for another offer in August in time for kick off

Just got the 20% off Sky's top package for a year too. Quoted the NTL, free Sky Sports offer. Thought I had blown it, customer service guy said "cancel then, you need to give a months notice, I'll do it for you now". He then put me through to a second dept and bingo !! A straight 20% off, no new contract or commitment on my behalf. Thanks OP and others, Rich.
  • :beGot fed up waiting for them to phone with an offer after they took my cancellation and have been skyless for weeks so phone them and lo and behold 3 months for half price :j

Success at last, but I've managed to get sky sports from today for £18/month for 3 months as I wanted to leave.
2p or not 2p? That is the question!
