Cheapest car to insure

I know there are many contributing factors to getting cheap insurance. I have an 18 year old that has just passed his test. I have looked at an £800 ‘Y’ reg Fiesta 1.2. Cheapest I can get is £3327.58, one insurer quoted £15,093.46. I have trolled through all the advice on this forum and tried all tactics like adding myself as a named driver, adding Thatcham class 1 security etc. I can then get it down to £2680.

My thinking is that although you can buy a group 1 car, some cars are more popular than others amongst these young drivers and presumably, there are more claims registered against these than less popular cars.

So although there are many group 1 cars, there must be some that have considerably less claims than others and therefore are cheaper to insure as a starting point. I have had this discussion with my son and he accepts that what we might end up with will be totally "un-cool" and he wont be "completely stoked" about it. But at the end of the day, a couple of clean years back and forward to collage in the most “un-cool” car on the planet will make his insurance much cheaper.

So, is there a list of the cheapest models of car to insure, that have the least accident claims?

Think along the lines of what's not popular. Loads of youths crash Fiesta's hence your quote.

Few round our way are going for new cars as some offer free insurance for two years.

WOW! My 17 year old's going to be disappointed then if that's how much it is for a fiesta!

You'll have to look at some really uncool cars, nissan micra is a granny car (I think corsa, clio type are cool) - and I mentioned on another thread my son had a kia mentor which was a 1600 but cheaper to insure than a clio because it was so dull! Good luck - will be watching thread for any help you get reducing this. Try adding a female as a named driver (we're better risk;) )

Some insurers give discounts for Pass Plus and in Wales I think it is subsidised and costs just £20.

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
    Try a Citroen 2CV
  • Uncool and dull will be the way to go. I had bought a Fiat Punto 1.2 but have sold it as it was £1000 more expensive than the Fiesta to insure.

    What's a Smart cost?

Have a look at some of the others with 600cc engines.
  • Surely a Lada Riva isn't much to insure.

Thats taking it too far. Thats just too uncool, although its not likely to get stolen! Have you ever tried to parallel park one of these? No power steering and the weight of a tank? You end up with arms like Popeye!!

It'll make a man of him.

Mind you driving a Lada would be like naming him Sue.

Ah but cool is one of those things that when you get to a certain point of uncoolness the uncoolness actually makes it cool. :D

  • Maybe uncool but a reality for many youngsters these days who have just passed their test. Car insurance for youngsters is now a bit of a joke.
