I don't buy cheap for my dog... he's a Westie so is prone to allergies, and I don't really want him eating rubbish anyway!

He has a bag of James Wellbeloved a month (a kilo bag) which is usually just over £6, not bad vs the supermarket stuff. He's fit and healthy and usually munches up the whole lot! I could never let myself give him some of the cheap, additive filled stuff.... when we got him, his Mums owners were feeding him Bakers... I was shocked! We slowly introduced him to JWB and have never looked back!

  • We have always fed our Springer Spaniels on Wag about £10 for 17KG to make it more interesting I add gravy when there is some left over usually make extra to last them a few days also buy OX hearts from morrisons they are cheap cook in microwave they are already diced and just add about 5-6 pieces a day with abit of gravy to the wag and they woof it down . Our old springer had it all her life she was 14 when we lost her early last year and the 2 new ones are just over a year and thriving on it, plenty of exercise and love and you can;t go wrong. Don't worry if your dog is fussy it won't go to many days before he or she dives in and eats dry food which is also much much better for their teeth. A dog can't go without water for long but can go weeks without food so don't panic if they don't eat dried food for a day or two it is a contest between them and you and they are hoping to win!

    Hi lesleycabby,

    Welcome to MSE. :)

We now have a Pets board which was started after this thread began on the Old Style board, so I've moved the thread over to the Pets board where you should get more replies.

  • We've always fed our dogs the BARF diet (bones and raw food). This comprises, for us, of raw chicken wings or carcasses (the bones only splinter when they're cooked), hearts of any description, though the current hound prefers lamb, minced beef with mixed veg, raw lamb ribs, tinned tuna or sardines mixed with oats, or any scraps we've got left over, including veg which has been cooked for stock.

Our previous dog had loads of allergies due to reacting badly to his first (and therefore last) injection, and feeding him this way kept them under control. He died when he was 15 and was a Border Collie .

The current woof is also a pure Border Collie and thrives on the diet. It doesn't have to be expensive as many butchers will give you bones for free, and chicken wings are really cheap in most places (even Waitrose's oganic ones!). Because it's a very filling diet you actually feed them less, making it cost saving in the long run. It's also better for their teeth and anal glands etc as it cleans from the beginning to then end IYSWIM :rotfl:

Just wanted to say Asda have 15kg bags of Wagg for £7, very good price. I used to feed my old dog on tinned food, my current dog has dried food and its soooo much cheaper. Dont allow them to be fussy!

sorry but i would never feed wagg.

Dogs DONT need cereals, cereals are NOT good for dogs in any way shape or form.

dogs NEED a good protein source, its vital to their health, derivatives and scrapings off the factory floor just dont cut it, they dont even come close.

dogs DONT need additives, flavours and colours, one of the top reasons for dogs being handed over to rescues is that they cant deal with the dog, its too hyper, needs to much exercises to calm it down etc etc. This is easily sorted by putting the dogs on a GOOD food, which doesnt contain tonnes of chemicals.

Some of the EC permitted additives in some dog foods (Wagg included) are KNOWN to cause cancer. Yet they're still allowed to use them.

Basically, its cheap cus its !!!!!!

    Me??

I used to feed raw, but no longer have the freezer space :(

Now I feed Quest, not found in the shops, made mainly for working dogs (which mine are at this time of year) but suits them even when resting.

Brilliant ingredients, no cereals, no additives, no cancer causing chemicals. Plus has a good few suppliments added in too for good measure :D

£28 a bag, £34 delivered, 1 bag lasts a month, and thats for 2 dogs

Don't worry about cereal content - we didn't evolve to eat cereals either -are you going to give up bread, pasta, sandwiches, pies, biscuits, cake, noodles, battered or breaded fish etc?

Sorry but do worry about the cereal content, cereal is a cheap filler which a lot of dogs can't digest properly, it's also the ingredient in food that makes them hyper. As Sid_wolf said Wagg is a right load of crap with hardly any meat in it. it's also a false economy feeding a cheaper food, I fed my pair ( shelties ) on Orijen which is an expensive food to buy initially between £16.99 and £21.98 for the 2.5kg bag but each bag could last me over a month, it would cost me at least that if not more to feed a cheaper food. My wee old girl now has Kidney failure and has to have a prescription diet, my boy is still on Orijen.
